Narendra Modi's victory in Uttar Pradesh strengthens his claim to a second term in national elections in 2019. It also re-ignites investors' faith in him after a radical decision to scrap high-value banknotes in November raised deep concerns about economic growth.

Analysts now expect Modi will be emboldened to embark on more reforms including reforming the retail sector, easing labour laws, and cleaning up bad debt at banks.

Home to a sixth of India’s population,UP is an important state to roll out the government’s agrarian reforms and job growth policies. BJP’s national spokesperson on economic issues, Gopal Agarwal, says his party’s victory in UP is not just a mandate for good governance and pro-poor policies of the Modi government.

The BJP government has not only promised to waive off all loans to small and marginal farmers and provide ‘zero percent’ interest farm loans but has also assured the people of Uttar Pradesh creation of one lakh jobs for the youth.
