Modi-Xi Summit: The story behind Mamallapuram’s Chinese connection

Mamallapuram, also known as Mahabalipuram, is located on the East Coast Road. The name is said to be derived from the word “Mamallan”, which means great warrior, a reference to King Narasimhavarman I.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet on Friday and Saturday for the second informal summit between them after the first was held in in Wuhan, China, in April 2018. The meeting, will not be held in New Delhi, which has been the tradition, but in the coastal town of Mahabalipuram, or Mamallapuram, almost 50 kilometers south of Chennai.
The question is why PM Modi chose this town to be the venue of the meet. While many believe that by choosing Mamallapuram, PM Narendra Modi wants to send a message to other Dravidian parties in the state that the BJP is serious about Tamil Nadu, another reason could be the town’s historical connections with China.
Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram)
After the decline of the Gupta Dynasty, the Pallavas rose to power in South India, ruling from the third century until the end of the 9th century AD. The best period of their rule, between 650 and 750 AD, was called the Golden Age of the Pallavas. The Pallavas were profound thinkers and were very powerful.
Mamallapuram, also known as Mahabalipuram, is located on the East Coast Road. The name is said to be derived from the word “Mamallan”, which means the great warrior, a reference to King Narasimhavarman I of the Pallava dynasty, who ruled the region from AD 630 to almost AD 670, and was also known for his love of art and sculpture. Many of the monolithic rock-cut structures that are now seen in this region were created during his time…

Train carrying 2.5 mn ltr water from Jolarpettai to reach parched Chennai

The train was supposed to reach on Thursday, but leakages in the valves led to the delay
Water tank LOAD SPL from Jolarpettai left with 50 BTPN wagons of water AT 07.20 hours on Friday. It is expected to reach Villivakkam around 2:00 pm. TN Ministers likely to inaugurate the unloading of water at Villivakkam.
The first train carrying water to parched Chennai is likely to leave from Jolarpet railway station on Friday. “The wagons have been filled. We are waiting for clearance to leave from Chennai Metro Water,”  A function has been planned at  the Villivakkam railway station to receive the first water train. State minister S P Velumani and few other ministers are expected to attend.
Fifty wagons of this train with a capacity of 50 kilolitres each would transport 2.5 million litres each trip. With two trains available for this purpose, the railway authorities are trying to supply at least 7.5 million litres a day to begin with, though the target is 10 million litres.
“Based on slots available for movement of these trains the capacity could go up,” said the officer. Southern Railways would charge Chennai Metro Water Rs. 7.5 lakh for each trip. The Tamil Nadu government has allotted Rs. 65 core for this project.
Officials say these trains would take around five hours to reach Chennai’s Villivakkam, 220 km away, from where water would be pumped to the Kilpauk Water Works, the pumping station that distributes water to localities in the city. However, the water supply by train would not increase supply to Chennai. It will only ease the pressure on the state government to ensure a minimum supply of 525 million litres to residents against the requirement of 830 million litres a day…
