India slams Pakistan for persecuting Hindus, Sikhs and other minorities

India described Pakistan as an epicenter of terrorism and said no one deserves unsolicited lecture on human rights from Islamabad
united nations
India on Tuesday described Pakistan as an epicenter of terrorism and said no one deserves unsolicited lecture on human rights from Islamabad that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities including Hindus, Sikhs and Christians Exercising the Right of Reply to the statements made by Pakistan at the 45th session of Human Rights Council (HRC) here, the Indian representative said that it has become habitual for Pakistan to malign India with false and fabricated narratives for its self-serving malicious purposes.
“Neither India nor others deserve this unsolicited lecture on human rights from a country that has consistently persecuted its ethnic and religious minorities, is an epicenter of terrorism, has the distinction of providing pensions to individuals on UN Sanctions list and has a Prime Minister who proudly admits training tens of thousands of terrorists to fight in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian diplomat said.

The diplomat said that it was not surprising that other relevant multilateral institutions have been raising serious concerns on Pakistan’s failure to stop terror financing and lack of effective actions against all terror entities in Pakistan. Highlighting the nefarious designs of Pakistan in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the diplomat said, “the mass influx of outsiders has whittled down the number of Kashmiris to an insignificant number in Pakistan occupied parts of Indian Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Laddakh…

In a press statement the octogenarian separatist leader, Geelani said he is distancing himself completely from the All Party Hurriyat Conference
Syed Ali Shah Geelani
Senior hardline separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday said he is distancing himself from the separatist platform — the All Party Hurriyat Conference. In a press statement the octogenarian separatist leader, Geelani said he is distancing himself completely from the All Party Hurriyat Conference. “He has written a detailed letter to Hurriyat members in which he said, given the present situation within the Hurriyat Conference, he is completely dissociating himself from the platform”, the statement said.
In his detailed letter to the members of the Hurriyat Conference, Geelani has said that henceforth he shall not be answerable in any manner about the future conduct of the constituent members of the platform. Hurriyat Conference was formed on March 9, 1993 as a united political platform of the separatist parties in Kashmir. Ten years after its formation, the Hurriyat Conference split into the moderate group headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and the hardline group headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Not keeping good health, Geelani has mostly remained under house arrest in his Srinagar uptown of Hyderpora area residence for the last four years. Before that also authorities used to detain him on and off under house arrest to maintain law and order in Kashmir.

Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah released after 8 months of detention under PSA

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, said the court should fix a short date for hearing the matter.
Omar Abdullah

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir administration to inform by next week if it is releasing former chief minister Omar Abdullah, who has been detained since the abrogation of Article 370 in August last year. A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and M R Shah told counsel appearing for the Centre that Abdullah’s sister Sara Abdullah Pilot’s plea against his detention will be heard on merit if he is not released soon.
“If you are releasing him, then release him soon or we will hear the matter on merits,” the bench said. The observations came after counsel for the Centre and the Jammu & Kashmir administration informed the court that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was appearing in the matter, is arguing in another court. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, said the court should fix a short date for hearing the matter.

To this the bench said only six benches are functioning due to the ongoing arrangement in the apex court and it does not know when the next turn will come.”Probably next week we are sitting and the matter will be taken up at that time,” the bench said.

J&K lifts ban on social media, access to 2G internet services till Mar 17

Earlier, only access to white-listed sites was allowed after the services were restored for a week on January 25 and subsequently extended from time to time.
jammu kashmir
Removing a ban on social media platforms, Jammu and Kashmir administration on Wednesday allowed access to all sites on 2G mobile data services and fixed line internet in the Union Territory till March 17. Earlier, only access to white-listed sites was allowed after the services were restored for a week on January 25 and subsequently extended from time to time.
The internet facility was snapped across Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 last year, the day when Centre abrogated the special status to the erstwhile state and bifurcated it into two union territories. The fresh order was issued by Principal Secretary, Home, Shaleen Kabra after assessment of the impact of telecom services regulation on the overall security situation and maintenance of public order and reports of law enforcement agencies.

No need to refer petitions on abrogation of Article 370 to larger bench: SC

The five-Judge Bench had on January 23 reserved its order on this issue
Supreme Court
The Supreme Court refused to refer to a larger bench a batch of pleas, challenging the constitutional validity of Centre’s decision of abrogating provisions of Article 370. The apex court said that it did not find any reason to refer the matter to a larger bench.
The five-Judge Bench headed by Justice NV Ramana and comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, R Subhash Reddy, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant had on January 23 reserved its order on this issue. Opposing the plea, the Centre had said that abrogation of provisions of Article 370, which granted special status to erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, has become a “fait accompli” leaving sole option to accept the change.
NGO People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association and an intervenor had sought referral to a larger bench. The NGO sought the referral on the ground that two judgements of apex court — Prem Nath Kaul versus Jammu and Kashmir in 1959 and Sampat Prakash versus Jammu and Kashmir in 1970 — which dealt with the issue of Article 370 are in direct conflict each other and therefore the current bench of five judges could not hear the issue.

India looking to set up separate theatre command for J&K: CDS Gen Rawat

Gen Rawat also said that submarines are a priority over aircraft carrier for the Navy
Bipin Rawat
India is looking at setting up a separate theatre command for Jammu and Kashmir, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat said on Monday. The air defence command is to be rolled out by the beginning of next year and the Peninsula command by the end of 2021, Gen Rawat told a select group of journalists.
The Indian Air Force will helm the air defence command and all-long range missiles as well as air defence assets will come under it, he said. “India is looking at setting up a separate theatre command for Jammu and Kashmir,” Gen Rawat said. Indian Navy’s Eastern and Western commands will be integrated into the Peninsula command, he said.
India will also have a separate training and doctrinal command and logistics command, he said. He also favoured a policy of staggered procurement of big ticket purchases, including acquisition of 114 fighter jets. The Navy’s demand for a third aircraft carrier will be considered after assessing performance of indigenously-built aircraft carrier, he said. Gen Rawat also said that submarines are a priority over aircraft carrier for the Navy.

Omar, Mehbooba booked under Public Safety Act on last day of detention

Earlier in the day, the PSA was also slapped on two political stalwarts from NC and its arch-rival PDP
Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were on Thursday night booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), barely hours before their six-month-long “preventive detention” was to come to an end. Earlier in the day, the PSA was also slapped on two political stalwarts from NC and its arch-rival PDP.
A magistrate accompanied by a police officer arrived at Hari Nivas where 49-year-old Omar Abdullah has been detained since August 5, the day the Centre abrogated the special status of the erstwhile state and also announced its bifurcation into two union territories — Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. He was handed over a warrant issued under the PSA, a law which was enacted by his grandfather Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah in 1978 initially to check timber smuggling.
The PSA, which came handy for police force to book separatists and militant sympathisers, has two sections — ‘public order’ and ‘threat to security of the state’. The former allows detention without trial for six months and the latter for two years. Omar, who has been junior foreign minister and commerce minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led Cabinet in 2000, was served with a three-page dossier in which he was alleged to have made statements in the past which were “subversive” in nature…

Trump again offers to ‘help’ resolve Kashmir issue, meets Pak PM in Davos

President Trump has repeatedly offered to mediate following India’s August 5 decision to revoke the special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the state into two Union Territories
US President Donald Trump greets Pakistani PM Imran Khan
President Donald Trump has said that the US is watching the developments between India and Pakistan over Kashmir “very closely” and repeated his offer to “help” resolve the longstanding dispute between the two neighbours as he met Prime Minister Imran Khan on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum here in the Swiss ski resort.
Addressing the media with the Pakistan Prime Minister prior to their private meeting on Tuesday, President Trump asserted that trade and borders were both critical points for discussion, while Khan said that for him, Afghanistan was the top priority. Trump told Khan, whom he referred to as “my friend”, that he would speak to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the ongoing Kashmir issues. The US president is expected to visit India in the coming weeks, marking his first visit after taking up his post in the White House.
“What’s going on between Pakistan and India if we can help, we certainly will be willing to. We have been watching it very closely and it’s an honour to be here with my friend,” he said. “The Pakistan-India conflict is a very big issue for us in Pakistan and we expect the US to always play its part in deescalating the tensions, because no other country can,” Khan said. President Trump has repeatedly offered to mediate following India’s August 5 decision to revoke the special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the state into two Union Territories, evoking strong reaction from Pakistan which has been trying to internationalise the Kashmir issue.

Senior Jammu and Kashmir police officer Davinder Singh was suspended on Monday, even as it emerged that he had sheltered three terrorists, arrested along with him, at his residence here right next to the Army’s XV corps headquarters at Badami Bagh cantonment, officials said.
Davinder Singh, who was decorated with the President Police Medal about four months ago, continued to be grilled by a team of police and intelligence investigators. His office at Srinagar airport, where he was posted as deputy superintendent of police in the anti-hijacking squad, was sealed, they said. Piecing together the chain of events, the officials said the two terrorists — self-styled district commander of banned Hizbul Mujahideen, Naveed Baba, and Altaf — were taken to the officer’s home on Friday by a lawyer Irfan, who the police said was an overground worker for terror groups.
Singh reported absent from duty on Saturday, the day he was apprehended by a team of policemen along with the other three at Mir Bazar on the national highway. The DySP had applied for leave from Sunday till Thursday, they said. Police had carried out searches at his residence here and seized two pistols and an AK rifle beside a large quantity of ammunition. Singh, whose name had been cleared for promotion as superintendent of police, is also likely to lose the gallantry medal that was awarded to him last year, the officials said. The DySP is deemed to have been suspended after having completed 48 hours in police custody, they said…

A view of the Supreme Court | Photo: PTI
The Supreme Court of India on Friday ordered immediate review of internet suspension in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, while pronouncing its verdict on a batch of pleas, including that of Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad challenging the restrictions imposed in the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) following abrogation of provisions of Article 370.
Restrictions on fundamental rights cannot be done by arbitrary exercise of power, said Justice Ramana while reading out the verdict. Freedom of speech and expression includes right to internet within Article 19 of the Constitution of India, said the apex court. SC also ordered restoration of internet services in all institutions providing essential services like hospitals, educational centres. The Bench included Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice B R Gavai.
In August 2019, the Modi government moved to amend Article 370 of the Constitution, which provided a special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and also proposed the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh. The Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act took place on October 31, 2019.

Five migrant labourers from West Bengal were shot dead by terrorists in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Tuesday, police said. Another labourer was critically injured by the terrorists, they said. All the victims hailed from Murshidabad district of West Bengal, the police said.
The attack happened on a day a delegation of parliamentarians from the European Union is visiting Kashmir to talk to locals and ask them about their experience after the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 of the Constitution in August.
Since the Centre’s decision on Article 370, terrorists have been targeting truckers and labourers, mainly who have come to the Valley from outside Jammu and Kashmir. On Monday, a trucker from Udhampur district was killed by militants in Anantnag, police said. This was the fourth truck driver to be killed by militants since August 5. On October 24, terrorists killed two non-Kashmiri truck drivers in Shopian district.

London Mayor condemns plans to hold anti-India march over Kashmir on Diwali

He said that his City Hall office would be working with Scotland Yard to ensure a “robust” policing plan was in place for such a march
Sadiq Khan
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has condemned plans to hold an anti-India march here on the Kashmir issue on Diwali next Sunday, saying it would deepen divisions in the UK capital and called on the organisers and prospective participants to cancel the protest rally. According to Met Police details on the permissions sought for the proposed march, an estimated 5,000-10,000 protesters plan to commence their march from Richmond Terrace near Downing Street and converge outside the Indian High Commission in London.
In response to a letter by Indian-origin London Assembly member Navin Shah, Mayor Saqib Khan said, “I absolutely condemn the plans for a protest march to take place on the auspicious day of Diwali, in the vicinity of the Indian High Commission in London.” “This march will only deepen divisions at a time when Londoners need to come together. That is why I am calling on those organising the march and all those considering taking part in it to think again and cancel their plans,” said the Pakistan-origin London Mayor in the letter dated October 18. He said that his City Hall office would be working with Scotland Yard to ensure a “robust” policing plan was in place for such a march.
In response to Shah’s request to consider seeking permission to ban the protest due to public disorder fears, he added: “As you know, the power to ban marches of this nature lies solely with the Home Secretary, not with me as the Mayor of London. I am copying this letter to both the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Cressida Dick, so they can clearly see the extent of my concerns about this march.” Shah, in his letter, recalled the violent clashes outside the Indian mission on August 15 between diaspora groups marking Independence Day and British Pakistani and separatist groups…

If Pakistan wants to tackle terror, we can send our Army: Rajnath Singh

Addressing election rallies in Haryana, the BJP leader also asked Pakistan to stop its Kashmir rant, saying no power in the world can separate Kashmir from India
Rajnath singh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday asked Pakistan to wage an honest battle against terrorism, saying India is ready to help but Islamabad’s intentions are deceitful, and cautioned the neighbouring country that it will disintegrate if it does not mend its ways.
Addressing election rallies in Haryana, the BJP leader also asked Pakistan to stop its Kashmir rant, saying no power in the world can separate Kashmir from India. “I want to tell our neighbour to stop (aiding) terrorism, wage an honest battle to fight terrorism, and if they are not able to fight terrorism, they can take help of neighbour India, we will extend cooperation to them to fight terrorism,” Singh said.
“I would like to make a suggestion to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. If you are serious enough in your fight against terror, we are ready to assist you. If you want our Army, then we will send them there for your help,” Rajnath Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.
“However, Pakistan’s intentions are deceitful,” he said.
Singh hit out at Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for his statement that he will continue to rake up Kashmir issue on international forums. “I was listening to Pakistan Prime Minister’s speech. He said till the time Kashmir does not get freedom, he will continue to raise Kashmir issue on international forums. “Forget it. Don’t even think about Kashmir. You have paid the price. In 1947, you divided India into two because of two-nation theory…. In 1971, Pakistan got divided into two. I want to caution Pakistan, bring a change in your thinking or else if they keep going on like this, Pakistan will disintegrate and no one can stop this,” he warned.

It is a ‘jihad’: Pakistan PM Imran Khan on Kashmir after returning from US

Khan on Friday raised the Kashmir issue in his address to the UNGA and demanded that India must lift the ‘inhuman curfew’ in Kashmir and release all ‘political prisoners’
imran khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on his return from the US on Sunday said that those standing by Kashmiris were doing “jihad” and Pakistan will support Kashmiris even if the world does not.
Prime Minister Khan, who focussed on the Kashmir issue in his maiden address to the UN General Assembly, told his party workers at the airport in Islamabad that “whether the world is with the Kashmiris or not, we are standing with them.” “It (standing by Kashmiris) is jihad. We are doing it because we want Allah to be happy with us,” he said.
“It is a struggle and do not lose heart when the time is not good. Do not be disappointed as the Kashmiris are looking towards you,” he said. He said “Kashmiris would win if the Pakistani people stood by their side”. Khan on Friday raised the Jammu and Kashmir issue in his address to the UNGA and demanded that India must lift the “inhuman curfew” in Kashmir and release all “political prisoners”.
In his speech that went on for about 50 minutes, far exceeding the 15-minute limit for UN speeches during the General Debate, Khan devoted half of his address to the Kashmir issue, warning that if there’s face-off between two nuclear-armed neighbours, the consequences would be far beyond their borders.
His war rhetoric was in sharp contrast to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s peace message from the same podium few minutes earlier in which he said India is a country, that has “given the world, not war, but Buddha’s message of peace.” Pakistan has….

US-India trade deal very soon, says Donald Trump after meeting with PM Modi

US president says it will be great if PMs of India and Pakistan can ‘work out something on Kashmir’

Modi, Trump
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday promised a trade deal with India “very soon”, and a larger deal down the line. Asked if any trade deal was expected between the two countries, Trumap, after his bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting, told reporters: “We are doing very well…I think very soon we will have a trade deal. We will have a larger deal later on.”
Narendra Modi said, “As far as trade (between India and the US) is concerned, I’m happy that our Petronet has signed an MoU of $2.5-billion investment in the energy sector.” After the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was in New York for discussions on a trade deal. “He has been having discussions with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, and significant progress has been made on a number of issues. The two leaders were optimistic of us reaching a trade agreement in the near future,” Gokhale said.
Modi and Trump’s bilateral meeting, and the US president’s comments on a trade deal between the two countries, came on a day when Trump warned China for its trade practices. He also slammed the World Trade Organization (WTO) for allegedly allowing China to get preferential treatment despite the size of its economy, saying the institution needed reforms. In his speech before the UN, Trump made a fresh attack against the global order, saying that “globalists” would not triumph. “The future does not belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots,” he said….

All’s well in India, says PM at ‘Howdy Modi’ rally; Trump hints about visit

Modi spoke of his govt’s decision to scrap the provisions of Article 370, and received sustained applause, and asked the audience to give a standing ovation to all members of the of Parliament
PM Modi, Donald Trump
“All’s well in India,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi told an estimated 50,000 members of the Indian diaspora in Houston on Sunday at an event titled Howdy Modi and days after his government slashed corporate tax to address concerns of an economic slowdown.
The PM concluded his rousing speech by inviting US President Donald Trump, along with his family, to visit India soon, and the two leaders with their hands clasped, took a round of the stadium waving at the crowd in a gesture to convey the strength of their friendship to which both had alluded to in their respective speeches.
Earlier, addressing the Indian diaspora at the NRG Stadium in Houston, the US President hinted at visiting India as early as October, while Modi seemed to endorse his support for Trump’s re-election next year, and suggesting to the Indian-American community to do the same, by declaring “abki baar Trump sarkaar”.
During his speech, the US President received loud cheers when he said India and the US were united in their fight against “radical Islamic terrorism”, which is likely to be interpreted as a message to Pakistan. Modi spoke of his government’s decision to scrap the provisions of Article 370, and received sustained applause, and asked the audience to give a standing ovation to all members of the two Houses of Parliament….
