ABVP protests in JNU, blames left for not letting mess workers prepare food

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that stopping mess facilities has created a huge burden on students as they are left in the lurch.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Thursday staged a protest in Jawaharlal Nehru University, accusing “left organisations” of preventing hostel mess workers from preparing food for students.

Around 30 members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) gathered in the Sabarmati lawn of the varsity and raised slogans against the “left organisations” and demanded good food and other amenities for hostel residents. Meanwhile, the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) has dismissed ABVP claims, saying the sanitisation and mess workers have been observing a strike against the administration and the student union has not prevented anyone from entering the mess area.

In a statement, the ABVP condemned what they termed as an “anti-student and anti-JNU act” by “left organisations”. They alleged that stopping mess facilities has created a huge burden on students as they are left in the lurch. “On May 5, residents of many hostels were not served breakfast and lunch because the Maoist goondas prohibited workers from entering the mess area and forcibly closed the mess. ABVP stands with workers who are crucial stakeholders of university community without whom the university cannot function,” alleged ABVP…Read More

JNU violence: Professor C P Chandrasekhar quits statistics committee

Chandrasekhar, who has served on key statistical panels in the past both as a chairman and member, tendered his resignation through an e-mail at around 9 pm on Monday
Professor C P Chandrasekhar
A day after violence broke out in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday, one of its professors, C P Chandrasekhar, resigned from a government-appointed committee, which was set to hold its first meeting to review India’s economic data.
Last month, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation set up the Standing Committee on Economic Statistics, led by former chief statistician Pronab Sen, to “review the extant framework relating to data sources, indicators, concepts or definitions and other issues” of the economic data-sets. The panel was created after concerns were raised about “political interference” in the statistical system. Two key statistical reports — one on the job market and the other on consumer spending — had been withheld by the government earlier.
“I was persuaded that this government is not concerned about the robustness of India’s statistical system. The JNU’s incident on Sunday has further undermined the faith in the system. It shows that we are now living in a different world and it’s hard to work with a government in which you have lost faith,” Chandrasekhar told Business Standard over phone on Monday night.
The committee was to hold its first meeting on Tuesday to finalise the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data for November 2019 and to set the future agenda of the newly formed committee. Chandrasekhar, who has served on key statistical panels in the past both as a chairman and member, tendered his resignation through an e-mail at around 9 pm on Monday…Keep Reading

It also alleged that outsiders were brought in with lathis and rods to “perpetrate violence”.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union on Monday accused the vice-chancellor of “perpetrating violence” in the university. Accusing Vice-Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar of behaving like a “mobster”, the JNUSU said he used all means to ensure that students and teachers faced “violence”.
It also alleged that outsiders were brought in with lathis and rods to “perpetrate violence”. “This Vice Chancellor is a cowardly vice-chancellor who introduces illegal policies through the backdoor, runs away from questions of students or teachers and then manufactures a situation to demonise JNU,” the JNUSU charged.
For nearly 70 days now, students of JNU have been on a strike against a hostel fee hike. “The violence that happened is the result of the desperation and frustration of the VC and his cronies. “But the chronology of events that unfolded today is a shameful episode for the Delhi Police who gave a safe passage to ABVP goons imported from outside,” the JNUSU alleged. It demanded that the vice-chancellor tender his resignation or be removed by the HRD Ministry.

Senior Union priests and JNU Students graduated class S Jaishankar and Nirmala Sitharaman quickly censured the episode. Sitharaman affirmed that the administration needs colleges to be protected spaces for all understudies. The Home and HRD services looked for reports from Delhi Police and JNU organization, individually. Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Delhi Police boss and enquired about the circumstance at JNU.
Sources said the viciousness began at around 5 PM. The JNU organization said “conceal lowlifes outfitted with sticks were meandering near, harming property and assaulting individuals” and that police had been brought in to keep up peace. The understudies claimed that the assailants entered inns and attacked understudies and instructors. The two students were picked up for questioning over allegedly inciting students of affiliated colleges to join the stir at the varsity’s Marina campus. The varsity, according to the protesting students, has declared holiday till January 2. The campaign of Gurmehar Kaur a Kargil martyr's daughter, against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday drew controversial reactions from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders with Union minister Kiren Rijiju wondering who was "polluting" her mind and another comparing her with wanted gangster Dawood Ibrahim.

Pratap Simha, BJP MP from Mysuru, tweeted, "At least Dawood did not use the crutches of his father's name to justify his anti-national stand."

His tweet came as Kaur's campaign went viral online with her photograph in which she said, "Pakistan did not kill my father. War killed him."

To mock her, Simha also posted a photograph showing Dawood with the message, "I didn't kill people in 1993. Bombs killed them."

Rijiju also took to Twitter to take a dig at her.

"Who's polluting this young girl's mind? Strong armed forces prevent a war. India never attacked anyone but a weak India was always invaded," the minister of state for home affairs said.

Some people say they need Freedom in India. Listen to those people taking shelter in India after facing torture in neighbouring countries.
Talking to reporters, he later said, "One should not say things which could demoralise the countrymen and the forces. Everybody has freedom but that does not mean that you raise slogans to weaken the country."

The daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh and a Delhi University student, 24-year-old Kaur had started a social media campaign "I am not afraid of ABVP" following the violence at Ramjas college. Her campaign has gone viral and received support from students across various universities.

"Everyone has right of views but she said Pakistan didn't kill our brave martyr and India should shun war. India never perpetrated violence," Rijiju said.

The Union minister of state for home said freedom of expression is not a licence to shout anti-national slogans in campuses. "Criticise the government but don't abuse the motherland," he said.

The Delhi University student, whose social media campaign against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) recently went viral, on Sunday alleged that she had received "rape threats".

Lady Sri Ram Ram College student Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, said she has attracted a barrage of hate messages over her stand on the issue.
"I have been getting a lot of threats on social media. I think it is very scary when people threaten you with violence or with rape," she told NDTV.

Issuing rape threats "in the name of nationalism" is not right, she added.
Her comments received widespread support, including from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"Just listen to this. THIS is BJP. They will destroy our country. Everyone must rise against their goondaism," he tweeted while sharing her statement.

After the North Campus clash, Kaur had changed her Facebook profile picture holding a placard which read "I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP".
