Jet Airways gets two suitors as EoI deadline ends, Hindujas back out

This is the second time that the lenders to Jet called for EoIs. The first round of bidding did not result in any resolution plan for the revival of the airline.
Jet Airways
South America-based Synergy Group and Delhi-based Prudent ARC have submitted expressions of interest (EoIs) for the revival of Jet Airways. The deadline for the submission of EoIs ended on Wednesday.
Sources said the Hinduja Group had explored investing in the beleaguered airline, but backed out later because it found no value. A Dubai-based fund, too, had evinced interest in investing in the grounded airline, but did not submit an offer. This is the second time that the lenders to Jet called for EoIs. The first round of bidding did not result in any resolution plan for the revival of the airline. The lenders gave ample time to prospective suitors by extending the deadline time and again.
Shares of Jet Airways were locked in the 5-per cent upper circuit for a twelveth straight day, at Rs 50.25 on the BSE, on Wednesday. The stock was trading at its highest level since July 18, 2019. With Wednesday’s gain, the stock price of Jet has jumped threefold, up 233 per cent in less than three months, from its record low level of Rs 15.10 hit on October 22, 2019.
Synergy Group, one of the suitors, has said slots at London’s Heathrow airport are critical to the airline’s operations and will decide on participating in the resolution only if it gets clarity. The group has also set other riders to revive the airline. It wants to form a new company with its assets, employees, and operating permit but minus all liabilities. As of now, Synergy Group has not found an Indian partner who will take majority control of the airline. Central government norms cap foreign investment in the airline at 49 per cent….

Full service Vistara decides to junk premium class on low income routes

The airline will have an all-economy cabin for Tier B and Tier C cities
Vistara
In a significant change of strategy, Vistara has decided to drop business class and premium economy seating from some of its aircraft. The airline, a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, has a three-class cabin. Since inception, it has tried to differentiate itself as a premium brand, in an Indian market dominated by low-cost carriers (LCCs) where intense competition narrows the space to raise fares.
The change underlines the necessity of a hybrid product for full-service airlines in the Indian market, despite the risk of operational complexity and confusing of customers. Both Air India and now-grounded Jet Airways had earlier tried the same strategy; Jet later rolled it back. “The Indian market has a situation in which full-service Vistara airlines, having a 50 per cent higher cost structure than LCCs, compete by matching fares rather than reducing costs. But, their cabin occupancy always remains lower than LCCs. This is due to the impact of lower loads in business class; the differential is significant,” goes a report from aviation consultants CAPA.
Sources aware of Vistara’s fleet planning said of the 50 narrow-body A320 and A321 aircraft it had ordered, it has since asked Airbus to send around 10 of those in all-economy configurations. The aircraft will then have 180 seats, against 164, in a three-class cabin. Vistara will operate these aircraft between Tier B and Tier C cities, where there is less demand for premium class seating, said people aware of the plan. As of now, it will continue to serve on-board meals in all aircraft…

Boeing CEO Muilenburg quits after 737 twin crashes, David Calhoun named CEO

Boeing said the company needed to ‘restore confidence’ and ‘repair relationships with regulators, customers and all other stakeholders.’
Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing
Boeing on Monday replaced its embattled chief executive, Dennis Muilenburg, saying a change was necessary as it attempts to restore its reputation amid the protracted 737 MAX crisis.
Boeing named board Chairman David Calhoun as chief executive and president, saying the company needed to “restore confidence” and “repair relationships with regulators, customers and all other stakeholders.” The company pledged to “operate with a renewed commitment to full transparency, including effective and proactive communication with the FAA, other global regulators and its customers.” The aerospace giant’s financial picture remains clouded following the global grounding of the MAX in March after two deadly crashes.
The move comes a week after Boeing took the monumental step of temporarily shutting down MAX production because of the crisis, which has pushed the aircraft’s return to the skies into 2020. Muilenburg will exit the company immediately but Calhoun, a former General Electric aviation executive, will not take the CEO post until January 13, 2020, while he exits existing commitments, Boeing said in a news release.
During that period, Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith will serve as interim CEO. Muilenburg’s response to the crisis has been increasingly criticized as the MAX grounding has dragged on far longer than initially expected as more disturbing details have dribbled out about the certification of the MAX. He has also been seen as tone deaf and awkward towards families of the 346 people killed in the crashes.

Pakistan on Thursday said it could order the closure of its airspace for India “at a time of its choosing”, but so far no decision has been taken yet. Foreign Office Spokesperson Mohammad Faisal during a media briefing on Thursday said the issue had been discussed at the highest level. “It is one of the many options that are being considered, we can exercise it at a time of our choosing. No decision has been taken as yet,” he was quoted as saying by Dawn.
The FO spokesperson’s comments come a day after Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that no decision has been taken yet to close the airspace to India and any such step would be taken after looking into each and every aspect of the move through consultation.
Qureshi said the issue did come up for discussions during the recent Cabinet meeting but the final decision would be taken by Prime Minister Imran Khan. He had dismissed reports suggesting that the airspace was being shut for India as “speculative”. Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday announced on twitter that the government was considering complete closure of airspace to India and complete ban on use of Pakistan land routes for Indian trade to Afghanistan…

Vistara airlines
Vistara, the joint endeavor aircraft of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, is hoping to capitalize on a disturbance in the flying segment, with the biggest private carrier Jet Airways’ being grounded and Air India attempting to remain above water, by injecting cash into armada development.
Vistara advertisers, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, have siphoned Rs 4,000 crore into the aircraft over the most recent one year, as per a Livemint report, the biggest capital implantation Vistara has gotten in a year since it began flying in 2015. Prior, Vistara had said it had contracted around 500 ex-workers of Jet Airways including pilots, the lodge group, engineers and other staff.
Both Jet and Air India have emptied various flying divisions, opening up many spaces at air terminals and clearing path for different bearers to extend tasks quicker. The carrier is increase its quality in the household advertise, having included six planes, including four Boeing 737s, to its armada in April. These Boeing 737s were prior flown by Jet Airways and will have two class designs (12 business and 156 economy seats).
At present, the full-administration transporter interfaces 24 goals, works more than 850 flights seven days served by an armada of 22 Airbus A320 air ship. Leslie Thng, CEO of Vistara, stated, “Our attention on serving the local market has stayed steadfast even as we plan to turn into a worldwide carrier. These rented air ship will be sent to meet the abrupt drop in limit in the market and to help comfort of explorers.”
Thng said the choice to draft distinctive air ship type in Vistara armada is a deliberately assessed one, which is both monetarily and economically practical, and will inevitably help in growing the carrier crosswise over India. In March, Civil Aviation Secretary P S Kharola said Vistara has been offered consent to work universal flights.
Be that as it may, the race to procure Jet’s piece of the overall industry won’t be simple as Spicejet and Indigo, as well, are going on an extension mode. Spicejet as of late said it has included around 23 planes over the most recent one month alone. The Gurugram-based spending transporter currently has 68 Boeing 737s, 30 Bombardier Q-400s and two B737 vessels.

Etihad Airways, the second-largest shareholder in Jet Airways and other lenders to the airline have reportedly approach UK’s Hinduja Group for a stake sale.
“The Hinduja Group has so far not given a clear commitment about investing in Jet, but began showing interest after Etihad representatives approached GP Hinduja, the elder brother, who heads the group. They had also bid for 26% in Indian Airlines The consprtium comprising of Ashok Leyland, Hinduja Finance Corporation and an overseas corporate entity, Machen Development Corporation, had put in bids for the two airlines but the stake sales did not take off. The group is reportedly also keen on Air India’s disinvestment plan.
Jet, once the biggest private carrier in the country, owes vast sums to its lessors, employees, fuel suppliers and other parties. It stopped all flights from April 17 after its lenders refused to give it any more funds to keep the carrier flying. The chances of its revival appeared bleak without any sign of a majority partner, and with the exit of key officials and a large number of its fleet going to rivals…

Companies News: Jet Airways pilots body, the National Aviator’s Guild, Monday appealed the State Bank of India (SBI) to release Rs 1,500 crore, which was proposed to be infused in the ailing carrier as part of a debt-restructuring plan last month.
The airline is operating just 6-7 planes, with almost its entire fleet being grounded due to non-payment of rentals to lessors amid severe paucity of cash. “We would like to appeal SBI to release Rs 1,500 crore funds for the airline to help it continue operations. We also appeal Prime Minister Narendra Modi to save 20,000 odd jobs at the airline,” National Aviator’s Guild ( NAG) vice president Adim Valiani told reporters at the airline’s headquarter, Siroya Centre, here Monday.

Six minutes to disaster: How Ethiopian Air’s pilots battled Boeing 737 Max

A preliminary report shows the crew’s actions to counter malfunction
Ethiopia, Ethiopian airlines
Economy News: The alarms started sounding just seconds after Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 took off on March 10 from Addis Ababa with 157 people on board. As speed and altitude readings started going haywire, a device known as a stick shaker activated on the left side of the cockpit, where the captain sits. The mechanism makes a loud noise and rattles a pilot’s control column to warn of an impending aerodynamic stall.
But the Boeing Co. 737 Max wasn’t about to stall. Instead, a computer was getting erroneous readings from a sensor mounted like a weather vane on the jet’s nose. The malfunction triggered an anti-stall feature that forced the plane into a dive — the same system that was implicated in a crash less than five months before in Indonesia that killed 189 people.
To counteract it, the Ethiopian Airlines pilots responded with at least some of the steps that Boeing and the US Federal Aviation Administration recommended after the first accident. But amid a chorus of confusing alarms, they also made a critical oversight as they struggled for control, according to three pilots with experience in accident investigations: They left the engines set nearly to maximum.
“The thrust was full bore the whole way,” said Roger Cox, a former accident investigator at the National Transportation Safety Board, who flew earlier models of the 737 while working as an airline pilot. “That is extremely curious.”

Pilot of crashed Ethiopian Airlines jet reported flight-control issues: WSJ

In recordings of the pilot’s conversations with controllers, he didn’t indicate any external problems with the jet or the flight.
Ethiopia, Ethiopian airlines
International News: The pilot of the Ethiopian Airlines jet that crashed on Sunday reported that he was having flight-control problems and wanted to return to the airport, the chief executive of the airline said.
In recordings of the pilot’s conversations with controllers, he didn’t indicate any external problems with the jet or the flight, like a bird collision, CEO Tewolde Gebremariam told The Wall Street Journal. The pilot “reported back to air-traffic controllers that he was having flight-control problems” and wanted to return to Addis Ababa, Gebremariam said.  The executive said he had listened to the recording and there were no other problems cited by the pilot.
Gebremariam said the black boxes recovered from the jet would be sent to Europe for analysis, although a final determination as to which country hasn’t been made. He said the UK, France and Germany were being considered, as well as the European Union Aviation Safety Agency based in Cologne, Germany, and that a decision would be made Wednesday.
The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that US and Ethiopian officials were discussing the destination of the black boxes, with American officials quietly pushing for them to be sent to the US. Black boxes are devices that contain voice recordings and data from the flight that are crucial in any crash investigation. Downloading the data takes technical expertise and equipment that only a few countries possess. The Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX crashed shortly after takeoff while on a scheduled Addis Ababa-Nairobi flight, killing all 157 people on board.
