CEO Agrawal had told employees that there would be “no layoffs at this time”. However, according to reports, one area where Musk may make job cuts is the company’s policy department

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, during discussions with banks, has reportedly planned to cut jobs at Twitter to improve its bottom line once he takes over. The Washington Post reported that Musk discussed making “efficiencies” at the micro-blogging platform in the conversations with bankers, “which could include job cuts.”

Twitter or its CEO Parag Agrawal have not commented on the reports. Agrawal had told employees that there would be “no layoffs at this time”. However, according to reports, one area where Musk may make job cuts is the company’s policy department. Musk’s displeasure was reflected in his criticism of Twitter’s policy head Vijaya Gadde this week, over censoring exclusive stories related to US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter’s laptop in the wake of the Capitol Hill violence….

Speaking for the first time about the plans, Lt Gen Sami Sadat told the BBC that eight months of Taliban rule has convinced many Afghans that military action is the only way forward

A former general in the Afghan army says he and many other soldiers and politicians from the previous administration are preparing to launch a new war against the incumbent Taliban regime in the country. Speaking for the first time about the plans, Lt Gen Sami Sadat told the BBC that eight months of Taliban rule has convinced many Afghans that military action is the only way forward. He said operations could begin next month after Eid, when he plans to return to Afghanistan.

The Taliban took control of the country in a rapid offensive last August. The hard-line Islamists swept across the country in just 10 days, as the last US-led NATO forces left following a 20-year military campaign. Lt Gen Sadat said that he and the others would “do anything and everything in our powers to make sure Afghanistan is freed from the Taliban and a democratic system is re-established”….

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Thursday said that though Covid-19 cases have increased in the capital, people are not developing severe disease and the hospitalisation rate is low. He attributed the low hospitalisation rate to vaccination and naturally acquired immunity. “Though Covid cases have increased in Delhi, people are not developing severe disease and the hospitalisation rate is low. This is because our population is fully vaccinated and a large number of people have had the disease in the past,” Jain told reporters here.

We should export water to Gulf in exchange for fuel: Goa agri minister

If Arabs can charge us for petrol extracted from under the earth, let us do the same with water which we can source by blocking rainwater: Goa’s Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik

Water should be privatised and excess rain water should be blocked by building a network of dams in the state and exported to Gulf countries in exchange for fuel, Goa’s Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik has said. Speaking at a government function on Wednesday, Naik also said that the harvested water could also be sent to drought-prone regions in Maharashtra. “We import petrol from foreign countries. We can export them water and import petrol. Goa witnesses around 126 inches of rain. If we block this water by building dams across Goa (it can be done),” Naik said.

“The work should be given to a private company and there should be a dam in every taluka. We can send the water to Arab countries or even to Maharashtra where there is shortage. “If Arabs can charge us for petrol extracted from under the earth, let us do the same with water which we can source by blocking rainwater,” Naik said, adding that private entities should be tasked with harvesting all the rainwater and keeping some aside for use in the state…Read More

Russia-Ukraine conflict stokes concerns over Turkey's nuclear plant

The war in Ukraine has demonstrated that nuclear power plants are a source of great uncertainty for public safety, said George Perdikis, former leader of the Cyprus Greens Party

Uncertainty over the safety of war-wracked Ukraine’s nuclear power plants has reignited concerns over a Russian-owned nuclear power station now being built in a quake-prone area on Turkey’s southern coast, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot activists said Wednesday.

About 200 activists representing two dozen organizations from both sides of ethnically divided Cyprus converged inside the United Nations controlled buffer zone that cuts across the capital Nicosia. They sought to voice their unease over ongoing construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, which is only 60 miles (100 kilometers) from the island nation’s northern coast.

Organizers said the annual event to commemorate the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that occurred 36 years ago has taken on an added urgency in light of safety concerns regarding Ukraine’s nuclear plants, such as Europe’s largest nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhia, which has been seized by Russia….

Billionaire tech pioneer Nilekani takes on Amazon, Walmart in India

India has become a battlefield for some global retail behemoths that are either shut out of China or are struggling to compete with local rivals there

He co-founded software powerhouse Infosys Ltd., became a billionaire and went on to spearhead a colossal government program to create biometric identification for India’s almost 1.4 billion people. Now 66, Nandan Nilekani has one more ambitious goal. The high-profile mogul is helping Prime Minister Narendra Modi build an open technology network that seeks to level the playing field for small merchants in the country’s fragmented but fast-growing $1 trillion retail market.

Its stated purpose is to create a freely accessible online system where traders and consumers can buy and sell everything from 23-cent detergent bars to $1,800 airline tickets. But its unspoken objective is to eventually curb the powers of Amazon.com Inc. and Walmart Inc.-owned Flipkart, whose online domination has alarmed small merchants and the millions of local mom-and-pop stores, called kirana, that form the nation’s retail backbone…

In a flurry of tweets, Musk claimed that he has set eyes on Coca Cola to “put cocaine back in” and “McDonald’s to fix ice-cream machines”

In the last 48-hour of his buyout of the micro-blogging site Twitter, billionaire Elon Musk is again on a fun trail. Pakistan poll body says general elections not possible before May 2023

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday said it cannot hold general elections before May 2023.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday said it cannot hold general elections before May 2023. This comes after ousted PTI Chairman Imran Khan demanded early elections and vowed to remain on the streets till polls are held, while the incumbent government also remains unsure about its time in office, Geo News reported.

In a statement, the Pakistan election body said it received a letter on April 18 from the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, stating that the seventh population census would commence on August 1 and its results would be received by December 31 this year.

As a result, the ECP said it would be constitutionally bound to hold elections based on the new census as the 2017 census — used to conduct polls nowadays — would become irrelevant, Geo News reported. According to the Pakistani newspaper, once the ECP receives the new census data, the ECP will start working on delimitation from January 2023, and it will take the body at least four months to issue new lists of the constituencies — and only then can elections be held

Humanitarian situation in Syria dire amid economic crisis: UN official

The humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire amid a worsening economic crisis, said Joyce Msuya, the deputy UN relief chief, on Tuesday.

The humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire amid a worsening economic crisis, said Joyce Msuya, the deputy UN relief chief, on Tuesday. As the eyes of the world turn to other conflicts, Syria is on the verge of becoming a forgotten crisis. Yet millions of Syrians struggle each month to survive. For many, their situation has never been direr since the civil war erupted in 2011, she told the Security Council. Fighting in many areas continues, and civilians, including women and children, are being killed and injured. The economic crisis continues unabated, she said.

Fuel shortages and lack of electricity impact the delivery of basic services, including health, education, and water and sanitation. Food and fuel prices are spiraling higher every month, putting the basic necessities for a healthy and dignified life even further out of reach for millions of people. Food prices rose another 18 percent between February and March, said Msuya, assistant secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and deputy emergency relief coordinator.
