"When India is celebrating 75 years of its Independence right now, this ground-breaking ceremony for this centre marks the beginning of a new era of traditional medicine in the world during the next 25 years," Modi said on this occasion. "Looking at the increasing popularity of holistic healthcare, I am confident that traditional medicine and this centre will become very important for each and every family of the world after 25 years, when India will be celebrating 100 years of independence," he added. He emphasized that though it is important to be "disease-free", the ultimate goal should be "wellness". "During the COVID-19 pandemic, we realised the importance of wellness. That is the reason why the world is searching for new avenues of healthcare delivery," said Modi. Referring to ancient scriptures, he said Ayurveda and other Indian traditional medicine systems were not limited to only treatment, as they are considered as holistic sciences.

J&K restrictions: SC orders review of internet suspension within a week

The Supreme Court of India on Friday ordered immediate review of internet suspension in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, while pronouncing its verdict on a batch of pleas, including that of Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad challenging the restrictions imposed in the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) following abrogation of provisions of Article 370.

Restrictions on fundamental rights cannot be done by arbitrary exercise of power, said Justice Ramana while reading out the verdict. Freedom of speech and expression includes right to internet within Article 19 of the Constitution of India, said the apex court. SC also ordered restoration of internet services in all institutions providing essential services like hospitals, educational centres. The Bench included Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice B R Gavai.

In August 2019, the Modi government moved to amend Article 370 of the Constitution, which provided a special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and also proposed the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh. The Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act took place on October 31, 2019.

Modi has always praised Pawar and made it a point not to launch a vicious attack against him during the state election campaign. Modi’s latest praise for Pawar came last month when he was speaking on the occasion of 250th session of the Rajya Sabha. Modi said other parties, including the BJP, should learn from the NCP on how to adhere to parliamentary norms.

In 2016, when Modi visited the Vasantdada Sugar Institute in Pune on an invitation from Pawar, he had praised the NCP chief as an example to others in public life. “I have personal respect for Pawar. India rejects Donald Trump’s claim of PM Modi seeking help on Kashmir

US President Donald Trump on Monday offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, calming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently sought his help in resolving the dispute. India has denied Trump’s claim.

The US president made this remark while meeting Pakistani PM Imran Khan at the White House. “I was with Prime Minister Narendra Modi two weeks ago. We talked about this subject (Kashmir issue). He said: ‘Would you like to be a mediator or arbitrator?’ I said: ‘Where?’ He said ‘Kashmir’,” Trump said in his opening remarks at the Oval Office during his meeting with Khan. “It’s a terrible situation, been going on for many years.”

Khan welcomed Trump’s remarks and said if the US agrees, prayers of more than a billion people will be with him. India, so far, has maintained that the Kashmir issue is a bilateral one and no third party has any role.

Rejecting Trump’s claim, Raveesh Kumar, spokesperson, ministry of external affairs, tweeted: “We have seen @POTUS’s remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate, if requested by India & Pakistan, on Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by PM @narendramodi to US President.”

Also, the official statement released by the White House on Trump’s meeting with Khan does not mention Kashmir. “It has been India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally. Any engagement with Pakistan would require an end to cross border terrorism. The Shimla Agreement & the Lahore Declaration provide the basis to resolve all issues between India & Pakistan bilaterally,” Kumar said….

Seeking to give more role to ministers of state, the prime minister said important files should be shared with them by the cabinet ministers. This, he said, would enhance productivity.

For ensuring faster approval on files, he said both the cabinet minister and his junior colleague can sit together to clear proposals, the sources said. Emphasising on punctuality, Modi said all the ministers should reach office on time and spend a few minutes discussing latest developments in the ministry with the officials. He further said ministers should come to office on a regular basis and avoid working from home.

At the same time they should keep meeting party MPs and general public on a regular basis and can start by meeting parliamentarians from their respective states, while suggesting that there is not much difference between a minister and an MP. The meeting of council of ministers was a regular feature in the previous tenure of the Modi government. He used to brief them about government’s various welfare schemes and how to make people aware about them. Modi used to review the performances of key ministries and sectors. Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Barring a last-minute miracle, any hope of a Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seat adjustment for the seven seats in Delhi was all but over on Tuesday with AAP and Congress candidates filing their respective nominations.

If suspense ended on the Congress-AAP tie up in Delhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra kept alive the suspense on whether she might contest from Varanasi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Campaigning in Bareli, Priyanka said she would abide by her party’s decision on contesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi. “I have said this repeatedly that I will do what the party asks me to do,” the 47-year-old said, adding that people were feeling harassed and wanted a change.

In the rest of the country, polling took place on 116-seats across 13 states and 2 Union Territories. These included all of Kerala’s 20, Gujarat’s 26 and Goa’s 2 seats. The Election Commission (EC) said, subject to revision, estimated voter turnout nationally was 65.61 per cent. It was also the largest phase of the elections, and its completion marked polling ending on 301 of 543 seats.

Key candidates in the fray were Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Amit Shah from Gandhinagar, Congress President Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in Thiruvananthapuram, Congress’s Mallikarjun Kharge in Gulbarga, Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Sharad Yadav in Madhepura and BJP’s Sambit Patra versus Biju Janata Dal’s Pinaki Mishra in Puri.

Several incidents of violence were reported in West Bengal. A 52-year-old man, who the Congress claimed to be its worker, was hacked to death outside a booth during polling in the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency, a senior state police officer said. In another incident, two women voters were injured in an alleged bombing in Murshidabad’s Domkal area..

'Let's take Modi out with sniper rifle': ISIS associate overheard on phone

A charge sheet has been filed by the Gujarat ATS against two ISIS operatives who might have been planning lone wolf attack on Jews

A charge sheet filed by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) against two suspected ISIS operatives last month has claimed that an unidentified associate of one of the two arrested men talked about assassinating Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Yeah let's take Modi out with a sniper rifle," is a line from a conversation cited in the charge sheet, attributed to an associate of Ubed Ahmed Mirza.

The charge sheet against Mirza and Mohammad Kasim Stimberwala -- both arrested last October -- was filed before the chief judicial magistrate at Ankleshwar in Bharuch district. As per a WhatsApp chat between Mirza and his associate, identified only as 'Ferrari', on September 10, 2016, Mirza talked about buying pistols.

In response, according to the charge sheet, 'Ferrari' said, "Yeah, let's take (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi out with a sniper rifle Insha-Allah". When 'Ferrari' mentioned a Russian-made gun, Mirza promptly replied, "I want it".

In another WhatsApp chat with Ferrari on July 26, 2016, Mirza was told that ISIS handlers had asked its modules and lone-wolf attackers in India to use machetes and big chopping knives to target people.Instead of taking the risk of buying guns and assembling explosives, one can target people, 

"especially foreign citizens", using chopping knives, Ferrari told Mirza.

According to an ATS official, the process to identify the other people who figure in these chats, including 'Ferrari', is underway. The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad has alleged that Stimberwala and Mirza were "highly radicalised by the Jehadi ideology of Islamic State and were actively planning lone-wolf attacks on Jews".

While Stimberwala worked as a laboratory technician at a hospital in Ankleshwar, Mirza was a practising lawyer at the Surat district court. Abdullah el-Faisal, a radical preacher based in Jamaica, and suspected ISIS handler Shafi Armar have been shown as absconding accused in the charge sheet.

ATS claimed Stimberwala and Mirza were in touch with el-Faisal and Armar to plan attacks on Jews in India. They conducted a recce of some of the targets and were planning to send radicalised youths outside India to take part in terrorist acts, the charge sheet said. Both have been charged under IPC sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 121-A (sedition) and 125 (waging war against any Asiatic power in alliance with India), apart from the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

economy news: Describing Aadhaar as a major "power" to bring about an "irreversible change" in the common man's life, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the Unique Identification Number will now be used in cases involving benami properties.

"By linking Aadhaar to Mobile and Jan Dhan, we have created such a system that could not have been imagined few years back.

"In last three years, with the help of Aadhaar, crores of fake names have been removed from the system. Now it is going to be a big weapon against benami properties," Modi said while addressing the inaugural session of the Hindustan Times Summit.

He said that the country saw a "behavioural change" after demonetisation, which helped in converting to a "clean and healthy economy".

"For the first time after Independence the corrupt people are scared of transacting in black money. They are scared of being caught. The black money which was earlier base of parallel economy, has now become part of formal economy," he said.

"Such an irreversible change is getting boost from Aadhaar. Aadhaar is such a power through which this government want to ensure rights of poor. It is also playing a big role in providing subsidised ration, scholarships, medicines, pensions and other government subsidies," he said.

He said the day the country would adopt maximum transactions via digital addresses, "organised crime would come to an end to some extent".

Modi said "big transformations" do not come easily and for it "hauling up of the entire system was needed".

"We can increase our ease of doing business ranking from 142 to 100 only when we take initiatives for big transformation," Modi said.

A day after senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha hit out at Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for creating an economic mess, his son and Union minister, Jayant Sinha, has defended the government's economic policies, stating that it is undertaking structural reforms that are "necessary to create a 'New India' and provide good jobs for our billion-strong workforce".

In a Times of India blog post, Jayant wrote that stories on the challenges faced by the Indian economy are "conclusions drawn from a narrow set of facts".

"They have simply missed the fundamental structural reforms that are transforming the economy," he said.(economy today)

Here is how he defended the Narendra Modi government:

1) The Union minister argued that one, or two, quarters of GDP growth were quite inadequate to evaluate the long-term impact of the structural reforms underway.

Former finance minister Yashwant Sinha, for his part, has said, "For quarter after quarter, the growth rate of the economy has been declining until it reached the low of 5.7 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal, the lowest in three years.

And please note that the methodology for calculation of the GDP was changed by the present government in 2015 as a result of which the growth rate recorded earlier increased statistically by over 200 basis points on an annual basis. So, according to the old method of calculation, the growth rate of 5.7 per cent is actually 3.7 per cent or less."
