A Japanese firm is giving non-smoking employees six extra paid leaves

Some non-smoking employees complained that they were working more than the staff who took time off for smoking cigarettes

Are non-smokers more productive as workers? A Japanese firm seems to think so. The company is granting extra paid leaves to employees who do not smoke. The step was taken in September after an employee suggested the measure earlier in the year.

The non-smoking employees of Tokyo-based marketing firm Piala Inc. complained that they were working more than the staff who took time off for smoking cigarettes during office hours, The Telegraph reported. Now, the company is granting non-smoking employees an extra six days of paid holidays a year.

"One of our non-smoking staff put a message in the company suggestion box earlier in the year saying that smoking breaks were causing problems", Hirotaka Matsushima, a spokesman for the company told The Telegraph. The company's CEO Takao Asuka agreed to give the non-smoking employees extra paid leaves to compensate.

Piala Inc's head office is on the 29th floor of a building in Tokyo. For a cigarette break, an employee has to go to the basement level. According to an estimate, each smoking break lasts for around 15 minutes.

Till October 30, 30 out of 120 employees have reportedly availed the free holidays.

"I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion", Asuka, the Piala Inc CEO, told Kyodo News. Matsushma informed that the scheme has already encouraged four people to give up smoking.....READ MORE

India jumps 30 spots to 100 in World Bank's ease of doing business rankings

Paying taxes, resolving insolvency lead the charts; starting business still a concern

 1509484035-9195 (1)

economy news: India has for the first time broken into the club of the 100 nations easiest to conduct business in, driven by ease of paying taxes, resolving the insolvency problem, access to credit, and protection of minority investors.

The World Bank’s ‘Doing Business 2018: Reforming to Create Jobs’ report, released on Tuesday, showed India's rank in ease of doing business jumped 30 places to 100 among 190 countries. India’s rank was 130 a year ago. India has also been adjudged the fifth best-performing nation globally in reforming the business environment. The country improved its rankings in six of the 10 sub-categories used by the World Bank to judge the climate of business.

The report, covering the period from June 2 last year to June 1 this year, ranked India top among the South Asian nations. India's distance to frontier ratio, which tells how similar a country's economic practices are to global best practices, has improved in nine out of 10 categories. Also, it is now among the top 30 nations in three categories — getting electricity, securing credit and protecting minority investors. However, the World Bank noted that India lagged in areas such as starting a business, enforcing contracts, and dealing with construction permits.

"The systematic reforms by the country in a persistent manner have paid off," said Annette Dixon, vice-president for the South Asian region, World Bank.

The multilateral agency has recognised reforms by the government in eight sub-categories. It said the country had adopted 37 reforms since 2003. "Nearly half of these reforms have been implemented in the last four years," it said. The Narendra Modi government has been in power for the past three and a half years.

The World Bank did not specifically ask respondents about the implications of the GST.
It said the tax was not an issue mentioned by a majority of the respondents but added that it would have a significant bearing on India’s rankings over the next few years.

In the protecting minority investors, India is now the fourth best country in the world, a jump from the 13th place last year....READ MORE<<<<<

Fadnavis, who accompanied Defence minister Sitharaman and Railway Minister Goyal, said the Army will also help in building foot overbridges at two other stations here.

23 people were killed in a stampede on the Elphinstone Road station foot overbridge (FOB) last month.

"We are taking the Army's help in building a new FOB at the Elphinstone Road station and at two other suburban train stations in Mumbai," Fadnavis told reporters at the venue.

"I have been informed that the work on these bridges will be completed by January 31," he said.

After the stampede on September 29, railway officials posted police personnel to manage the crowd on busy platforms, evicted hawkers from suburban train stations and started speeding up infrastructure projects on suburban network.

Last date for filing GSTR-2, 3 extended by a month

GSTR-2 is the most important return for GST compliance since the availability of input tax credit depends on it

1505244347-268

The government on Monday once again extended the deadline for filing the goods and services tax (GST) returns for purchases and input-output transactions for July.

The last date for filing purchase return, or GSTR-2 Deadline extended to November 30, from October 31. That of input-output transactions, or GSTR-3, was put off to December 11, from November 10.

“To facilitate trade, the last date for filing GSTR-2 and GSTR-3 for July 2017 has been extended to November 30 and December 11, respectively,” a government tweet said.

Archit Gupta, chief executive officer, ClearTax, said, “The earlier last date for filing GSTR-2 coincided with the deadline for submission of audited income tax returns and as such was putting a strain on some taxpayers.”

GSTR-2 is the most important return for GST compliance since the availability of input tax credit depends on it.

M S Mani of Deloitte said that the extension will enable many more taxpayers to file returns. “The challenges faced by some of the taxpayers in dealing with mismatches in GSTR-2 would hopefully get resolved in November,” he added.
The GST Council had, in its meeting in September, extended the deadline for filing GST returns by a month, amid technical glitches faced by assessees on the GST Network (GSTN) portal. The extension of deadline will give more time to taxpayers to file input tax credits, take remedial action for mismatches, and enable accurate filing.

Looking for a job? Here's how you can increase your chances of getting hired

If you have tried looking for a job but not been happy with the results, maybe it is time to make a few changes and improve your chances of getting hired.

Have you been looking for that right job for quite some time but not managed to find anything suitable yet? Are you worried that maybe you are doing something wrong that is delaying your success in getting a job?
If you have tried looking for a job but not been happy with the results, maybe it is time to make a few changes and improve your chances of getting hired.

ALSO READ:  JOBS NEWS

Of course this does not mean that just following these tips will guarantee you get that job. Your hard work, work experience, the way you present your resume, your dedication to work and your confidence have a big role to play. The following tips will add a boost to your job search, and help you be more ahead in line to get hired.

1. Create a resume that fits the job you are applying for: Often, candidates prepare a resume that details their educational qualification, interests, past work experience if any, volunteer work if any and so on, and send it across to all the companies and job hunt sites. While most of the information that you share on your resume will remain the same, it is important that you build your resume according to the role you are applying for. For instance, if you are applying for the role of a content creator, you have to add details about where all you have written earlier, whether professionally or out of choice, and talk about the kind of interests that you write on. On the other hand, if you are applying for the role of a social media handler, you will have to change the information in such a way that it shows your skills as someone who can manage to get an audience to a social media page for the brand.

2. Instead of the job responsibility, talk about your strength in the role: Most candidates give details about the roles they have worked in before, and go on to describe the exact nature of the work. If you are applying for a similar role, or in a similar company, or even if you are applying as a fresher, the person who is hiring you already understand the requirements of the role.....READ MORE

Kohli snatches ICC top spot from A B de Villiers, surpasses Sachin's points

Kohli scored 263 runs in the series and has reached 889 points, which is the best ever by an India batsman

1509350645-5736

Indian captain Virat Kohli on Monday returned to the top of the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen after logging career-high rating points, going past the iconic Sachin Tendulkar in the process.

Kohli has moved back to the top within 10 days of losing it to South Africa batsman AB de Villiers after the rankings were updated following India's 2-1 home series win over against New Zealand.
The 28-year-old Delhi batsman, who scored 263 runs in the series, has reached 889 points, which is the best ever by an India batsman.

"The previous highest points tally of 887 was managed by Sachin Tendulkar in 1998 and by Kohli earlier this year," the ICC said in a statement.

India opener Rohit Sharma's 174 runs in the series has seen him reach a career-high rating of 799 points, even though he remains in seventh position.

Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has risen one place to 11th in the latest rankings.

The list for bowlers continues to be led by Pakistan pace bowler Hasan Ali while India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has reached a career-best third after finishing with six wickets in the series against New Zealand.

Other bowlers to move northwards include left-arm spinners Mitchell Santner of New Zealand (up two places to 14th) and Pakistan's Imad Wasim (up 14 places to 27th). Adam Milne has also made significant movement, gaining 11 slots to reach 42nd position.

India's 2-1 win over New Zealand was not enough for them to overtake South Africa, who hold the top ranking in the at 121 points, ahead of India by two points.

Samsung Galaxy J5 gets new security patch: Here’s why it is important

The update addresses Blueborne vulnerability and is currently rolling out to Galaxy J5 users in Europe via over the air (OTA)

1491550933-013

Samsung has released a critical software upgrade for its budget Galaxy J5 smartphone. The update addresses the Blueborne vulnerability, which was recently identified as a serious threat that spreads through Bluetooth and takes control over user devices.

The update with firmware number J530FXXU1AQI3 is currently rolling out to Galaxy J5 Update users in Europe via over the air (OTA). Recently, Samsung had released the security patches to address Blueborne vulnerability for several its flagship series smartphone– Galaxy S, Note and A series.

Other smartphone manufacturers such as Motorola are also pushing out the security patch to address the vulnerability.

Here is what the Blueborne vulnerability is and why the security updates are important

BlueBorne is a malicious code that spreads from one device to another via Bluetooth. It allows hackers to take control of affected devices by running commands in devices that go unnoticed by the users. Unlike other malicious viruses, the BlueBorne does not require the user to click on a link or download something over the internet. It just spreads through Bluethooth, even if the other device is not paired with the affected device. It spreads even when the Bluetooth is set as undiscovered.

How to safeguard your device

The best way to keep your device protected from BlueBorne vector is to update your device with the latest security patches deployed from operating system (OS) developers or original equipment makers (OEMs). Most of the OEMs and OS developers have already started releasing patches to address the vulnerabilities associated with BlueBorne vector.

Another way to protect your device is by switching off your Bluetooth. The device security should be set to allow minimum access to Bluetooth-based services. This is no proper solution but can shield the device till you receive the security patch to address the vulnerabilities.

Aadhaar mess up: Maharashtra govt freezes farm loan waiver to reverify beneficiaries

The government expects to complete the verification by November 15

The Maharashtra government has frozen its farm loan waiver to reverify beneficiaries after names of 100 farmers were found to be linked to a single Aadhaar number.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis convened a meeting with the State Level Banking Committee as well as the IT department to fix the problem and a new list of beneficiaries of the farm loan waiver scheme has been sent to banks on who have been authorised to release funds immediately.

The government expects to complete reverification by November 15. It had earlier aimed at disbursing money by October-end.

When a loan waiver was announced by the UPA government in 2008, money was transferred to banks without any scrutiny and the implementation took 18 months, while his government released funds within three months, he said in a PTI report.

"However, we realised that around one lakh bank accounts had same Aadhar numbers. So the data had to be cleaned. But a new list has been released and we have deposited Rs 4,000 crore in the central account of ICICI Bank and they have been authorised to release the funds immediately," Fadnavis told PTI.( economy policy)

To a query on farmer suicides, Fadnavis said suicides are taking place for the last twenty years, and to prevent them, his government has increased the investment in the sector three-fold, which has led to the agriculture growth to reach 12.5 per cent from the earlier negative growth.

Applications of who have received the money won’t face scrutiny, Mungantiwar said.

Just like other smartphones with ultra-wide screens, the OnePlus 5T is believed to sport a fingerprint scanner on the back that will allow the phone to accommodate a big screen on the front with small bezels.

Recently, an online technology information portal, Android Authority, released OnePlus 5T’s purported picture render that showed the phone from an angle revealing the almost similar build but with a new widescreen and no fingerprint scanner on the front.
