Opposition strength in RS to weaken further this year, Cong to lose seats

The Opposition strength in Rajya Sabha is set to reduce further as the Congress is expected to lose some of its seats in elections slated for later this year to fill up 68 vacancies. According to sources, the Congress could lose around nine of its 19 seats that are falling vacant due to its reduced strength in some states, amid speculation that the party is contemplating bringing in some bigwigs, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Randeep Surjewala, to the Upper House.
The Congress is confident of retaining nine seats on its own and winning one or two more with the help of its allies. The party is set to gain seats in states where it is in power — Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. The Opposition strength will fall after elections are held to fill up 68 vacancies in April, June and November, that may lead to the ruling NDA slowly inching towards the majority mark of in the Upper House, sources say. While 51 seats in Rajya Sabha are falling vacant in April, five more in June, one in July and 11 in November this year.
Top Congress leaders Motilal Vora, Madhusudan Mistry, Kumari Selja, Digvijaya Singh, B K Hariprasad and MV Rajeev Gowda are among the top Congress leaders whose tenures are ending in April and June. Of them, Vora, Selja and Digvijaya Singh are likely to be renominated by the party. Besides, its leaders Raj Babbar and P L Punia are unlikely to get renominated from Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, where the ruling BJP is set to make major gains. One RS seat in Uttarakhand and 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh are falling vacant in November this year.

A few competitors from the storied party, home to a significant number of India’s establishing fathers when it won autonomy from Britain in 1947, essentially surrendered in front of the May 23 race. One registered himself with an emergency clinic to abstain from crusading after the gathering wouldn’t give him enough cash to run a surveying corner, agreeing two individuals from his battle who asked not to be recognized as they’re weren’t approved to address media.
He wound up losing, alongside many others as the gathering figured out how to win just 52 of 543 seats – almost as awful as its most noticeably terrible ever execution in 2014. It neglected to win a solitary seat in about portion of India’s 29 states.
“The Congress I accept is near eradication, and given its ongoing record it presumably has the right amazing,” Ramachandra Guha, history specialist and journalist. “Yet, we should not overlook that while it lived and flourished, the Congress supported the components of a plural majority rules system that hosts outlasted the gathering.”
The central issue presently is how to manage Rahul Gandhi, the hesitant beneficiary in a line that incorporates India’s first head administrator Jawaharlal Nehru and its second longest-serving pioneer after him, Indira Gandhi. Congress Party pioneers rejected Rahul Gandhi’s acquiescence after the destruction, and requested that him modify the gathering. However, there are questions among the general population about whether the Gandhi family should keep on driving the gathering…

Robert Vadra
The ED has issued a fresh summons to Robert Vadra, brother-in-law of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, to appear before it Thursday in connection with a money laundering case linked to purchase of alleged illegal assets abroad, officials said. They said Vadra has been asked to depose before the investigating officer of the case at around 10:30 AM at the agency’s office in New Delhi.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) only last week moved a court here seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail given to Robert Vadra in this case and the Delhi High Court had then issued notice to him seeking his response. The ED, which had grilled Vadra over a dozen times in this case, had told the Delhi HC that itrequired Vadra’s custody as he was not cooperating in the investigation and and the trial court had not discussed the gravity of the offence in its order that gave relief to Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi.
The ED case against Vadra relates to allegations of money laundering in the purchase of a London-based property located at 12, Bryanston Square worth 1.9 million GBP (British pounds), which is allegedly owned by him. The agency had told a Delhi court that it has received information about various new properties in London which belong to Vadra. These include two houses, one worth 5 million GBP and the other valued at 4 million GBP, six other flats and more properties. Vadra has denied the allegations of possessing illegal foreign assets and termed them a political witch hunt against him. He said he was being “hounded and harassed” to subserve political ends.

Meanwhile, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will visit Ambala, Hisar and Rohtak. Priyanka will seek votes for party candidates Kumari Selja and Bhavya Bishnoi. Fielding a terror accused: BJP leaves the moral question to the people

The controversial candidate has fueled opposition accusations of hypocrisy and political opportunism against the BJP
Pragya Singh Thakur
Indian law does not prevent the country’s ruling party from fielding a candidate accused of terrorism in the general election, a senior member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party told Bloomberg News.
Pragya Singh Thakur, a self-styled Hindu holy woman who has been charged by Indian law enforcement with a bomb blast in a Muslim neighborhood that killed six people and injured 100 in 2008, should be allowed to run for office, the BJP’s national general secretary Ram Madhav said.
There is no technical or legal hurdle preventing her from contesting and there is a belief she has been “falsely implicated,” Madhav said in a wide-ranging interview with Bloomberg News Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait in New Delhi on Saturday.
“I can understand there are opinions about her candidature, and there are opinions within the party also, I don’t deny that,” he said. “But what we are saying is: by law, technically there’s nothing that goes against her candidature.” “The moral issue should be left to the people,” he added.
Candidate Crimes
The controversial candidate has fueled opposition accusations of hypocrisy and political opportunism against the Hindu nationalist BJP, which regularly condemns Pakistan-based groups for launching terrorist attacks on India. While Indian political parties of all stripes have run candidates accused of serious crimes, including murder and kidnapping, no party has yet decided to field a person accused of terrorism. Madhav said the idea to run Thakur as a candidate in the state of Madhya Pradesh came from local party officials who thought she would mount a strong challenge against senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh…

If suspense ended on the Congress-AAP tie up in Delhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra kept alive the suspense on whether she might contest from Varanasi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Campaigning in Bareli, Priyanka said she would abide by her party’s decision on contesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi. “I have said this repeatedly that I will do what the party asks me to do,” the 47-year-old said, adding that people were feeling harassed and wanted a change.
In the rest of the country, polling took place on 116-seats across 13 states and 2 Union Territories. These included all of Kerala’s 20, Gujarat’s 26 and Goa’s 2 seats. The Election Commission (EC) said, subject to revision, estimated voter turnout nationally was 65.61 per cent. It was also the largest phase of the elections, and its completion marked polling ending on 301 of 543 seats.
