Punjab election results 2022: 'Revenge' vote gets AAP landslide

Badals, Amarinder, Channi, and Sidhu lose as AAP’s promises convince voters

Punjab Elections Results 2022: The wave was unmistakable. Perhaps it’s the sheer magnitude that would have left even comedian turned politician and Punjab’s next chief minister Bhagwant Mann perplexed. The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) spectacular victory, the largest ever by any party since the re-organisation of the state in 1966, has come on the back of stellar performances in all three regions of Punjab – Doaba, Malwa and Majha. The Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) that have ruled the state between themselves since independence have suffered a huge blow in the state. AAP’s sweep has meant that for the second consecutive time, the Akalis would not even be the principal opposition party in the state.

“This massive win is more a rejection of the existing duopoly than it is of the acceptance of a new party in Punjab. People were frustrated with caste, corruption and nepotism and yearning for change for many years now. In 2017, Prashant Kishor’s event management skills managed to deny AAP that chance with it finishing behind the Congress. This time around, Kejriwal’s door to door and grassroot campaign made voters connect with AAP” said Pampa Mukherjee, professor of political science at Panjab University….Read More

A Delhi woman has slammed the state government after losing her father to coronavirus. She alleged that her father was not admitted in time by a Delhi government hospital, a charge denied by the authorities of the facility. The woman, Amarpreet Kaur, took to Twitter earlier in the day, saying, “My dad is having high fever. We need to shift him to hospital. I am standing outside LNJP Delhi & they are not taking him in. He is having corona, high fever and breathing problem. He won’t survive without help. Pls help.”
An hour later, she again tweeted, saying, “He is no more. The govt failed us.” Her tweets were widely circulated by netizens. Amarpreet is a social activist, her family said. The authorities at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, a dedicated Covid-19 facility, denied the charge, saying the patient was “brought dead”.

According to information shared by the hospital, the 68-year-old man, who also had asthma, died at 7:37 am. “According to a report from the emergency department, the man was tested for Covid-19 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) and the report came on June 1, in which he was found positive for coronavirus infection,” a senior official said…Read More

More African countries confirm first virus cases as Jack Ma pledges aid

Thirty African countries – more than half the continent – are now treating nearly 400 patients with coronavirus, after Tanzania, Liberia, Benin and Somalia said they registered their first cases
coronavirus
More African nations confirmed their first cases of the coronavirus and shut borders amid fears of the disease’s impact on fragile health systems, as Chinese billionaire and Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma pledged to donate over 1 million testing kits to the continent. Thirty African countries – more than half the continent – are now treating nearly 400 patients with coronavirus, after Tanzania, Liberia, Benin and Somalia said they registered their first cases.
Africa had until recently been spared the rapid spread of COVID-19, which has infected at least 180,000 people worldwide and caused over 7,000 deaths. But health experts are concerned the continent’s often dilapidated health infrastructure will struggle to cope as cases mount. “We cannot ignore the potential risk to Africa and assume this continent of 1.3 billion people will blissfully escape the crisis. The world cannot afford the unthinkable consequences of a COV-19 pandemic in Africa,” Ma’s foundation said in a statement.
The foundation will send 1.1 million testing kits, 6 million masks and 60,000 protective suits and face shields to Ethiopia for distribution to Africa’s 54 nations, it said. Earlier on Monday, the World Bank said it had committed $60 million to Kenya to help the East African nation battle the outbreak. Some countries on the continent, such as conflict-hit Somalia, depend on donors to support basic public health facilities. Somalian Health Minister Fawziya Abikar Nur said the ministry had quarantined and tested four Somalis who came from China last week, and one had tested positive for the respiratory disease. International flights to Somalia were suspended for two weeks, the aviation minister said.

He also announced the closure of gyms, nightclubs, and spas for this month.
The Uttar Pradesh government, too, shut down multiplexes, cinema halls, and clubs in 11 districts, including Lucknow and those along the Nepal border, till March 31. The state government had recently ordered the closure of schools and colleges until March 22. Tamil Nadu also joined scores of states in closing down educational institutions, public events, and large gatherings. Better leave Congress than do AAP propaganda: Ajay Maken to Milind Deora

This comes days after Deora had refuted Congress Delhi-in charge PC Chacko’s statements
Ajay Maken
Congress pioneer Milind Deora went under assault from his gathering associate, Ajay Maken for lauding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, upon the arrival of his swearing-in for the third term in the national capital.
“Sharing a lesser known and welcome certainty – the Arvind Kejriwal-drove Delhi Government multiplied its incomes to Rs 60,000 crore and kept up an income surplus in the course of the most recent 5 years. Something to think about: Delhi is presently one of India’s most financially judicious governments,” Deora’s tweet on Sunday read. Be that as it may, Ajay Maken, who has likewise filled in as the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly previously, asked Deora to “leave Congress” before spreading “crazy realities.”
“Brother, you need to leave INC India-Please do-Then proliferate silly facts! However, let me share much lesser know realities 1997-98-BE (Revenue) 4,073cr2013-14-BE (Revenue) 37,459crDuring Congress Govt Grew at 14.87% CAGR2015-16 BE 41,1292019-20 BE 60,000AAP Gov 9.90% CAGR,” Maken tweeted. This comes days after Deora had invalidated Congress Delhi-in control PC Chacko’s announcements, accusing late Sheila Dikshit for the gathering’s embarrassing presentation in the as of late held Assembly decisions in the national capital.

“Sheila Dikshit ji was an exceptional legislator and executive. During her residency as Chief Minister, Delhi was changed and Congress was more grounded than any time in recent memory. Shocking to see her being accused after her demise. She committed her life to INC India and the individuals of Delhi,” Deora had tweeted, with a bit of Chacko’s announcement inserted.

AAP sweeps Delhi: BJP crawls to single-digit; Congress draws a blank

The BJP, despite its successes in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls, has struggled at the Assembly level
Delhi election, arvind kejriwal
Delhi Elections 2020: The incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has secured a massive win in the Delhi Assembly polls, attributing its success to “politics of work” against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) “politics of hate”. Polling for Delhi’s 70 Assembly seats was held on Saturday after a fractious election campaign. The BJP’s defeat in Delhi comes on the heels of it losing in Jharkhand, failing to form the government in Maharashtra, and being forced into a coalition in Haryana after the party fell short of the majority mark.
AAP’s win on Tuesday is being seen as a verdict at a time when nationwide protests are being held against the amended citizenship law, including at the capital’s Shaheen Bagh. The BJP had made Shaheen Bagh the focus of its election campaign, appealing to residents of Delhi to vote out “terrorists”. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who only last month quit as BJP president and was succeeded by J P Nadda, had put his personal prestige at stake by leading the election campaign for the party, addressing several public meetings and also going door to door to contact voters.
During the campaign, AAP, and its leaders including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia, had tried to sidestep the contentious issue of the new citizenship law. They had instead focused on governance issues, particularly related to better schools and health facilities such as ‘mohalla’ clinics, delivery of subsidised power, water supply and free public transport for women…

A person was killed after some unidentified people opened fire at AAP MLA Naresh Yadav’s convoy in southwest Delhi’s Kishangarh village on late Tuesday night, police said. The newly-elected MLA along with his supporters was returning home after paying obeisance at a temple in his constituency, the police said. According to sources, seven rounds were fired at the Mehrauli MLA’s convoy.
The Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR in connection with the firing incident. Delhi Police said that investigation is on and working “on all angles” to find out the motive behind firing the shots at Naresh Yadav‘s convoy. One volunteer Ashok Mann was killed while another volunteer Harender was injured when shots were fired at Aam Aadmi Party MLA Naresh Yadav’s convoy here on Tuesday night.
In a tweet, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh claimed party volunteer Ashok Mann was killed in the attack. “Convoy of MLA Naresh Yadav attacked in Mehrauli, Ashok Mann killed. Naresh Yadav was returning home after visiting a temple,” Singh said in a tweet in Hindi. “Shots fired at AAP MLA @MLA_NareshYada and the volunteers accompanying him while they were on way back from temple. At least one volunteer has passed away due to bullet wounds. Another is injured,” the AAP said in a tweet…

Delhi: AAP kept its nerve even as BJP breathed fire in the campaign

AAP seems to be cruising to victory in Delhi, the result of not getting diverted by BJP’s campaign
Delhi Chief Minister waves to his supporters during a road show in Delhi: Photo ANI
Early trends suggest that the Aam Admi Party is set to get a second term in Delhi and Arvind Kejriwal a third shot as the chief minister. It began as a comfortable cruise for the AAP, turned into a closer contest with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a bounce back for the AAP. At the time of writing AAP was projected to win 55 of the 70 seats while the BJP was placed at a distant second with leads in just 15 seats. The Congress seemed unlikely to open its account for the second consecutive time since 2015. However, the spike in the BJP’s vote share to a little over 40 percent as of now suggested that a chunk of the Congress votes might have shifted to AAP.
However, the surprise element was that Manish Sisodia, Arvind Kejriwal‘s man for all seasons and reasons, was trailing in his constituency, Patparganj in East Delhi. Sisodia was perceived as the Delhi government’s mover and shaker and the author of its far-reaching education and health reforms. The shock reversal of Sisodia’s fortunes has been attributed to a statement he made in the penultimate phase of electioneering that was construed as his support to the Shaheen Bagh protests, contrary to the official line that directed that the AAP’s stand must be neutral.
However, Sisodia’s reversal is a side story to an election in which the AAP fought back every inch of the way against the BJP’s formidable organisational machinery and a feverish campaign, that bordered on the vicious, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Home minister Amit Shah, with “stars” like Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister, deployed to accentuate the “faith” divide in the aftermath of the agitation against the Centre’s citizenship package…

In the 2013 Assembly elections, Kejriwal trounced three-time Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. In the 2015 Assembly polls, Kejriwal emerged stronger against the Congress and the BJP. He defeated Kiran Walia (Congress) and Nupur Sharma (BJP) and got 64.14 per cent of the votes.

Delhi Elections: Campaigning for the Delhi Assembly elections has intensified with the date of polling inching closer. Today, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed a public rally in east Delhi’s Kondli. Rahul launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over rising unemployment, and claimed that the Prime Minister will not be able to step out from his house in the next six months due to his “false promises of employment”.
Addressing a rally, Gandhi said it was Congress‘s 15-year tenure, from 1998 to 2013, in the national capital that gave the city its modern infrastructure such as the metro service. Priyanka Gandhi, general secretary of the All India Congress Committee, held a public meeting at Hauz Qazi area of the national capital. She accused BJP and AAP governments at the centre and state levels, respectively, of spending huge fortunes on advertisements but not working on the issues that impacted people…
PM spent Rs 5,200 cr on ads for Delhi election: Priyanka
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spent Rs 5,200 crore on advertisements in the lead up to the election. AAP has spent Rs 611 crore on advertisements. They will not tell the public the real issues – why unemployment level has been rising, why BJP is on a privatising spree, how BJP has killed small and medium businesses with demonetisation and implementation of GST”, said Priyanka Gandhi..

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday accused Arvind Kejriwal of having a “partnership” with Pakistan and appealed to the people in Delhi to not vote for the AAP chief as it will make Pakistan happy.
Ramping up his attack on the Shaheen Bagh protest, Adityanath said the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is merely an excuse for people to vent their anger against the scrapping of Article 370. “You must have seen their partnership on 370. Arvind Kejriwal used to speak in the same voice as Imran Khan on Article 370. You must have heard it.

Adityanath addressed three rallies on Monday in the national capital ahead of assembly elections. “Will Pakistan decide who Indians should vote for. Adityanath said his Delhi counterpart Kejriwal has become a “toy in the hands of antisocial and anti-India elements”. BJP president J P Nadda on Monday accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of “supporting those who want to break India”, as he raised the issue of AAP government not giving police the permission to prosecute ex-JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and others in a sedition case.
He also sought to know from the AAP national convener “whether acting against anti-nationals would hurt his vote bank”. “Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and other anti-India forces raised seditious slogans like ‘Bharat tere tukde honge’ in JNU. They were threatening to violate India’s sovereignty. Law enforcement agencies moved in, investigated the matter and in Jan 2019 were ready to file chargesheet,” Nadda tweeted.
“They (police) sought Kejriwal’s permission to prosecute this ‘tukde tukde’ gang but one year later, till yesterday, no permission was granted. Kejriwal must tell Delhi why is he supporting those who want to break India? Is it because acting against these anti-nationals will hurt his vote bank,” he wrote on the microblogging site.
