Alcohol intake is key to long-term weight loss in diabetic people

Turns out, alcohol consumption may attenuate long-term weight loss in adults with Type 2 diabetes.

It was earlier noted that losing weight can help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. While the best practice for weight loss often includes decreasing or eliminating calories from alcohol, few studies examined whether people who undergo weight loss treatment report changes in alcohol intake and whether alcohol influences their weight loss.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania suggested that while alcohol consumption is not associated with short-term weight loss during a lifestyle intervention, it is associated with long-term weight loss in people with overweight or obesity and Type 2 diabetes,
In the study, close to 5,000 people who were overweight and had diabetes were followed for four years. One group participated in Intensive Lifestyle Intervention (ILI) and the other in a control group consisting of diabetes support and education…

Youth hormone necessary for conceiving after 40

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), also known as the youth hormone is an adrenal steroid hormone in the body synthesized by the adrenal glands, which are then converted into androgens, estrogen, and other hormones.

BS | These hormones are responsible to regulate fat and mineral metabolism, sexual and reproductive function, and energy levels. The level of DHEA increases until our body is in the late 20s, after which it starts declining with age.
“DHEA supplements help by increasing the androgen levels within the ovarian environments to a normal range, which improves egg quality. The high-quality healthy eggs develop into high-quality embryos, which have a better chance of implantation and lower risks of miscarriage,” said Dr. Sowjanya Aggarwal, Gynaecologist, Max Hospital, Vaishali.
“DHEA supplements diminish ovarian reserve (DOR) through the practice of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). The pregnancy outcomes have been improved for those who suffer from premature ovarian aging (POA) as well as women over the age of 40 whose ovarian reserve is declining as a part of the natural aging process,” she added.
Through various studies, it has been found out that pregnancy chances increase in women with higher androgen levels after DHEA supplementation.

‘Alcohol causes 2.8m deaths each year worldwide’

In a shocking revelation, a recent study has found that alcohol is associated with nearly one in 10 deaths in people aged 15-49 years old.

Overall, according to the research that estimates levels of alcohol use and health effects in 195 countries between 1990 to 2016, 2.8 million deaths occur each year worldwide.
Based on their analysis, the authors suggest that there is no safe level of alcohol as any health benefits of alcohol are outweighed by its adverse effects on other aspects of health, particularly cancers.

Health

According to lead author, Dr Max Griswold of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, USA, “Previous studies have found a protective effect of alcohol on some conditions, but we found that the combined health risks associated with alcohol increase with any amount of alcohol. In particular, the strong association between alcohol consumption and the risk of cancer, injuries, and infectious diseases offset the protective effects for ischemic heart disease in women in our study.”
“Although the health risks associated with alcohol starts off being small with one drink a day, they then rise rapidly as people drink more. Policies focusing on reducing alcohol consumption to the lowest levels will be important to improve health. The widely held view of the health benefits of alcohol needs revising, particularly as improved methods and analyses continue to shed light on how much alcohol contributes to global death and disability,” added Dr Max Griswold.
Globally, one in three people (32.5 percent) drink alcohol – equivalent to 2.4 billion people – including 25 percent of women (0.9 billion women) and 39 percent of men (1.5 billion men). On average, each day women consumed 0.73 alcoholic drinks, and men drank 1.7 drinks.
