In the 39th match of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 5 runs in a last-ball thriller and retained their top position on the VIVO IPL points table. Sunrisers Hyderabad had a reputation of defending low totals and did it again against RCB. Parthiv Patel and Manan Vohra gave a fine start as looked to attack right from the start, shedding the defensive approach behind. Shakib trapped Parthiv for LBW, this made RCB captain Virat Kohli come to the crease. Kohli started his inning with the signature cover drive and soon disrupted Shakib's bowling figures. A twist came in RCB's all-well tale when Shakib Al Hasan got the prized wicket of RCB captain Virat Kohli, Yusuf Pathan deserved equal credit for that as he took a one-handed catch stretching his right arm. Spinners were deployed from both ends to seize the opportunity and it went that way as De Villiers soon followed Kohli to pavilion after Rashid's googly hit the stumps.

Hyderabad bowlers kept a tight vigil on the run flow. Mandeep Singh and Colin de Grandhomme were virtually the last hope for RCB and they needed to rescue their team from this situation. To snatch a victory from the mighty 'orange army' looked a herculean task now. Both the batsmen to elude the bowlers from taking any wicket till the last over. With 12 runs needed off the last over, RCB had to pull something extraordinary and Hyderabad needed another master defence. Bhuvneshwar Kumar did not let the batsmen cross the magic number in the last over. Earlier, Alex Hales and Shikhar Dhawan opened for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Deviating from the usual, RCB deployed Moeen Ali with the ball in the first over and reaped the benefit as the openers observed cautious approach. Tim Southee proved instrumental in getting the first breakthrough for RCB just as Hales was removed in the third over. SRH captain Kane Williamson made his intention clear from the first ball. He went on to score a crucial half-century. RCB managed to bundle out SRH for 146

Rashid Khan came to bowl the 7th over and Vohra was dropped by Siddharth Kaul. Kohli took a quick double of the 5th ball as he looked desperate to win the match. Rashid put the lid on run flow as he conceded only 5 runs in his first over. Sandeep Sharma came to bowl the 8th over and gave the much-needed breakthrough to SRH as Vohra luckily dragged the ball onto the stumps. AB de Villiers came to crease after the fall of the 2nd wicket and took a single to open his account. Sharma bowled a quite over as he gave away 4 runs in his 2nd over. Rashid Khan came to bowl 9th over and Williamson dropped Kohli which went for four. An eventful over as Williamson in desperate need of wicket took a DRS caught behind wicket but there was no spike in the ultra edge and ABD survives. Rashid gave away 7 runs in his 2nd over.

After the end, of over 9th over RCB scored 71 for the loss of 2 wickets with Virat Kohli (38 runs off 27 balls) and ABD (3 runs off 4 balls) at the crease

Shakib Al Hasan came to bowl the 10th over and took the wicket off Virat Kohli, an over-confident rash shot, which opened the match again. Moeen Ali came to crease after the wicket of Kohli (39 (30b 5x4 1x6)) as Shakib conceded 4 runs in his 3rd over. Rashid Khan bowled the 11th over and a top edge of Moeen Ali bat went for four followed by a single. Rashid Khan got the massive wicket of AB de Villiers needless shot, given Kohli got out in the previous over. Another RCB batting collapse? Mandeep Singh came to the crease after the wicket of ABD and Rashid Khan conceded only 5 runs in his 3rd over. Siddharth Kaul came to bowl the 12th over and Moeen nearly chopped on but ball went for four. Kaul took the wicket of Ali of the 4th ball as RCB was half down as they lost 3 wickets in the space of 12 balls.

Sandeep Sharma came to bowl the 13th over and choked the run flow as he gave away only 2 runs. Shakib Al Hasan came to bowl the 14th over and conceded only 6 runs as RCB batsmen were dealing in singles and doubles. Sandeep Sharma came to bowl the 15th over and conceded 5 runs before Mandeep hit the last ball for four thanks to a missed field. Kaul bowled the 16th over and conceded only 6 runs. Rashid Khan came to bowl the 17th over and Grandhomme muscled Rashid for 2 sixes before surviving a stumping scare. Rashid Khan gave away 14 runs as RCB needed 25 runs in 18 balls. Bhuvneswar Kumar came to bowl the 18th over and Mandeep Singh took a single off the first ball. Grandhomme got an under edge of the 3rd ball which went for four, a much-needed boundary for RCB. Despite the boundary, Bhuvneswar Kumar gave away only 6 runs. A herculin task for RCB as the ball started reversing. Siddhartha Kaul came to bowl the 19th over and conceded 4 runs in first three balls. Kaul bowled a brilliant over as he gave away only 7 runs as Grandhomme and Mandee never looked to hit any boundary. RCB required 12 runs in final over to keep their playoff hopes alive but Bhuvneswar did it again for Sunrisers Hyderabad as he bowled an excellent over giving 6 runs. SRH won the match by 5 runs.
