Tracking Fani: When nation’s worst cyclone in 20 years shook parts of India

Cyclone Fani is being seen as the most severe cyclonic storm over the east coast in nearly two decades

With extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani inching closer to Odisha, the state started evacuation of vulnerable population from low-lying areas in 13 districts to temporary shelters. “Fani will hit the Odisha coast Friday morning. Safety of people will be given highest priority. About 800,000 people are targeted to be evacuated and steps are being taken by the districts collectors accordingly,” Krupa Sindhu Mishra, spokesperson, SRC’s (Special Relief Commissioner) office, said.
According to the data received from different districts, 250,000 people had already been evacuated to shelter houses till 2 pm on Thursday. Odisha has identified 3,001 shelter homes to accommodate people from pockets in Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara districts, among others. About 100,000
Cyclone Fani made a landfall in Puri on Odisha coast this morning on Friday which triggered heavy rainfall coupled with high velocity winds with speed of 175 kmph in vast areas. Large areas in the seaside pilgrim town of Puri and other places were submerged with water as heavy rains battered the entire coastal belt of the state. Several trees were uprooted and thatched structures destroyed at some places including Bhubaneswar.
According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre, Cyclone Fani is billed as the most severe cyclonic storm since the super cyclone of 1999 that claimed close to 10,000 lives and left a trail of destruction in vast swathes of Odisha, (Listen to this podcast for more)
