Ranveer, Kareena, Alia to star in Karan Johar’s next ‘Takht’

Filmmaker Karan Johar has announced his next directorial venture, “Takht”, with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles.

The period drama also features Bhumi Pednekar, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor and veteran actor Anil Kapoor.

The film marks Johar’s first after 2016’s romantic drama “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”.

Sharing the plot of the film, the 46-year-old director wrote on Twitter,”‘Takht’ is an incredible story embedded in history. An epic battle for the majestic Mughal throne. A story of a family, of ambition, of greed, of betrayal, of love and of succession.”

Sumit Roy has written the screenplay for the film. Hussain Haidry and Roy have penned the dialogues.

The project, slated to release in 2020, is produced by Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta.

The film is Dharma Productions’ second ensemble cast period drama to be announced this year.

“Kalank” starring Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha is already in production.

Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Sadak 2’ gets a release date

Mahesh Bhatt is all set to make a remake of his 1991 superhit movie, ‘Sadak’ and the flick will hit the theatres on November 15, 2019.

Confirming the news, film critic and trade analyst took to Twitter and wrote,”IT’S OFFICIAL… #Sadak2 to release on 15 Nov 2019… Lead cast and other details will be announced shortly… Produced by Mukesh Bhatt… Mahesh Bhatt in association with Vishesh Films presents the film.”

The 1991 blockbuster starred Sanjay Dutt, Pooja Bhatt, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Deepak Tijori and Neelima Azeem.

‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3’: Convoluted and trite (IANS Review, Rating: **)

The third edition of Director Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3, once again revolves around its central characters, Saheb’s first wife, Madhavi Devi (Mahie Gill) and Saheb aka Aditya Pratap Singh (Jimmy Sheirgill) plotting and planning to oust and eliminate each other in their quest for power and supremacy. Clearly there is no love lost between them.

Yuvraj Uday Singh (Sanjay Dutt), from another royal family, is a notorious gangster and a Russian Roulette expert, who is shunted away to London after he commits a murder. Upon his return, he too finds himself in the midst of a family which is playing games with him in a bid to have him removed from the scene.

A convoluted plot of treachery, deceit and lust, unfolds over a period of two hours plus, where each character tries to outdo and outsmart the other cleverly in this noir drama.

The setting in an opulent haveli in Boondigarh, in Rajasthan, remains the same and so do the central characters with the exception of Sanjay Dutt, who is a new addition as the gangster Baba. How the lives of the three central characters get intertwined and the unexpected twist in their intended plan, is what propels the film forward.

Ranbir Kapoor-starrer ‘Sanju’ collects Rs 1.2 billion in the first weekend

The movie, directed and co-produced by Rajkumar Hirani, raked in Rs 386 million on Saturday and followed it up with a record setting collection of Rs 467.1 million on Sunday

After a better than anticipated opening of Rs 347.5 million on Friday, Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Sanju’ continued to attract footfalls throughout the weekend, ending up with a Rs 1.2 billion haul by the end of its first weekend.

The movie, directed and co-produced by Rajkumar Hirani, raked in Rs 386 million on Saturday and followed it up with a record setting collection of Rs 467.1 million on Sunday, bringing the film’s three day collection to Rs 1.2 billion. This makes it the most successful opening of the year, and among the top opening weekend collections of all time.

Some of the records broken by the film include ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ that recorded first Sunday haul of Rs 461 million and ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’s opening weekend haul of Rs 1.14 billion. It has also beaten ‘Padmaavat’ (Rs 1.14 billion) and ‘Race 3’ (1.06 billion) to be the highest opening weekend earner of the year so far. At Rs 1.2 billion in three days, ‘Sanju’ is now expected to cross the Rs 2.5 billion mark at the domestic box office with certainty.

Starring Kapoor in the titular role, along with actors like Vicky Kaushal, Dia Mirza, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Anushka Sharma among others, the film opened to mostly positive reviews. It was released in close to 4000 screens across the country, and another 1300 screens abroad (traditional territories like UK, US and Middle East). It is among the widest distributed films of the year, second only to Salman Khan’s Eid release ‘Race 3’ (4300 screens).

While the movie opened to mixed to positive reviews, Kapoor’s acting has been universally lauded by critics and moviegoers which is helping it attract footfalls. Also, ‘Sanju‘ has little to no competition at the movie halls right now, with the only other films being ‘Race 3’ and ‘Incredibles 2’. While the animated Disney flick continues to do well in its second week, it does not pose a challenge to a mainstream Bollywood flick like ‘Sanju’. Race 3 was expected to peter out in its second week in any case, given the panning the movie got from the critics, and the split word of mouth.

Sanju is also set to give Fox Star Studios its second big hit of the year after ‘Baaghi 2’ collected Rs 1.12 billion earlier this year.

You don’t have to be a cricket fan to love ‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams’

Tendulkar comes across in the film as guileless and driven

There is something about Sachin Tendulkar, something so correct and so innocent you want him to win in life even when you know he is no more the ‘God’ of the cricket field.

The rousing farewell speech that Sachin gives at the end of this astutely emotional journey into the heart and mind of India’s most celebrated Bat Man, left me dewy-eyed. This, when I know zilch about cricket and practically nothing about Sachin’s exploits on the field. What I do know “and what this film is able to tell us in comprehensive strokes of revelation” is that greatness is not thrust on the great by chance.

One has to break bones and crack ribs to get there.

“Sachin: A Billion Dreams” is the story of a national hero who sails through every crisis with his simple philosophy of good existence and hard work. Sachin’s life is blameless. He has never been in any controversy and he doesn’t incite scandalous thoughts. This film could’ve easily been the opposite of what the Sanjay Dutt biography would be, given the man’s colourful lifescape. Instead the director unfolds a treasury of memories and anecdotes in which the aroma of ambition is mingled with the flavour of yearnings.

Sachin Tendulkar’s wife talks about how he would clam up after every defeat on the field. Does that make him a difficult man to live with? She doesn’t say. Dissent is not an option that people close to Tendulkar would want to exercise. What I gathered after watching Tendulkar’s tale being tossed into a cauldron of exploratory channels all leading to a glorious exposition on heroism,is that every great life has a very strong support system behind it. ReadMore…
