Thunderstorm, dust storm warning across India: Here's a state-wise forecast

With thunderstorms and dust storms killing hundreds across the country, it has become prudent to keep a track of IMD's warnings. Here's IMD's forecast for the coming four days

 

Uttar Pradesh is expected to be hit by another round of thunderstorms over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on Sunday. The state witnessed over a dozen deaths due to thunderstorms over the weekend.

The weather department has predicted thunderstorms for several states across India, including Bihar, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, in the next few days.

The fresh warning comes days after 17 people were killed and 11 injured in deadly dust storms in Uttar Pradesh.

Dust storms have become a regular phenomenon in the state, leaving over 130 people dead last month. On May 13, 39 people died in various districts, including Bareilly, Barabanki, Bulandshahr and Lakhimpur Khiri.

On May 9, a severe storm left 18 dead and 27 others injured. Five people died in Etawah district, three each in Mathura, Aligarh, and Agra, two in Firozabad and one each in Hathras and Kanpur Dehat.

Here is what the IMD has predicted for different parts of the country:

Dust storm or thunderstorm in 13 UP districts on Monday: The IMD has predicted another round of storms in 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh in the next two days.

According to the meteorological department, the districts that might be hit by thunderstorms or dust storms are Banda, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur, Hardoi, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Rampur, Moradabad, Meerut, Bijnore, Muzaffarnagar, and Saharanpur.

The weather office has also forecast "very likely" rain in certain parts of the state.

Thunderstorms across India on Monday: Apart from Uttar Pradesh, the country's eastern, central and southern regions are also expected to witness thunderstorms on Monday. The regions include Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Thunderstorms expected to hit North India on Wednesday and Thursday: The IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied with gusty winds and lightning over Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi for Wednesday and Thursday.

Heavy rain in South and Northeast India: Isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Konkan, Goa, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Karnataka, and Kerala are very likely to receive heavy rainfall over Monday and Tuesday....Read  More

Thunderstorms kill 41 in 4 states; air, road traffic hit in Delhi: Updates

Dust storms and thunderstorms wreaked havoc on Sunday in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and the national capital, leaving behind a trail of destruction

Dust storms and thunderstorms, which hit several states of the country on Sunday, claimed at least 41 lives in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.

Uttar Pradesh bore the maximum brunt of the thunderstorm and hail that left at least 18 people dead, while 12 people, including four children, were killed in West Bengal. Nine people lost their lives in Andhra Pradesh and two in Delhi, officials said.

Thunderstorms also occurred at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The devastation comes over 10 days after storms hit UP, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Punjab, killing 134 people and injuring over 400. Accounting for 80 deaths, UP was the worst affected, with most of the deaths occurring in the Agra district in the western part of the state.

Subsequently, on May 9, several parts of Uttar Pradesh were struck by a severe storm that left 18 dead and 27 others injured.

1) Thunderstorm kills 18 in UP: Thunderstorm and hail that hit parts of North India on Sunday claimed at least 18 lives in Uttar Pradesh.

At least 28 people were injured and around 37 houses were damaged in the hail and thunderstorm, Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary (Information) Awanish Awasthi said.

Five deaths have been reported from Kasganj, three from Bulandshahr and two each from Ghaziabad and Saharanpur. Apart from this, one death each has been reported from Etawah, Aligarh, Kannauj, Hapur, Noida and Sambhal.

2) Twenty-three killed in West Bengal, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh: Officials said 12 people, including four children, were on Sunday killed in West Bengal after lightning struck them amid heavy rains. Further, Andhra Pradesh saw nine deaths, while Delhi witnessed two deaths.

Five deaths were reported from the Howrah district, two deaths each were reported from West Midnapore, North 24-Parganas, and Nadia districts, and one from the Murshidabad district, an official of the West Bengal disaster management department said.

3) Flights diverted in Delhi: The sudden change of weather in Delhi forced airport authorities to divert at least 10 domestic flights on Sunday, an official said. Vistara's Srinagar-Delhi flight was diverted to Amritsar and its Lucknow-Delhi flight was sent to Lucknow due to the inclement weather.

4) Dust storm hits traffic in Delhi: According to a senior Delhi Traffic Police officer, traffic was affected in Lutyens' Delhi, West and South Delhi.

Traffic was affected due to the uprooting of around 70 trees. About 25 trees that have fallen on roads are yet to be removed, the traffic police said.

All traffic police cranes were deployed while disaster management vehicles of traffic and municipal bodies were also being involved in removing bigger trees which were uprooted, they said.

Several parts of North and East India, including Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, could witness thunderstorm and squall on Tuesday, with winds gusting up to 50-70 kilometres per hour, an alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast. The Delhi government has decided to close all evening schools on Tuesday and put search and rescue teams on a standby in the wake of the IMD warning.

As a preventive measure following the thunderstorm warning, the Haryana government closed schools for two days -- Monday and Tuesday. Further, dust storms hit Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana on Monday evening with many residents preferring to stay indoors. Chandigarh met department Director Surinder Paul had said that rainfall activity was likely to pick up in the region from Monday night.

In the national capital, the Delhi Traffic Police on Monday advised commuters to plan their journey after checking weather conditions. In the wake of the warning, the Delhi Metro, too, has decided to exercise extreme caution in running trains. In fact, Delhi Metro commuters might face delays in their journey depending on wind speeds.

Here are the top 10 developments around the IMD forecast of thunderstorm, dust storm, and squall in various parts of the country:

1) Thunderstorm and squall in North India, Bengal and Sikkim today: The IMD has issued an alert forecasting that several parts of North and East India could witness thunderstorm and squall on Tuesday with winds gusting up to 50-70 kilometres per hour. The IMD issued an amber-coloured alert, indicating severe weather, for parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim, and Sub­Himalayan West Bengal.

There are four types of colour codes signifying the level of caution -- green (which means no action), yellow (situation to be watched), amber (government agencies to be prepared for severe weather) and red (action needed by the agencies).

Delhi residents might get some respite as Skymet Weather has forecast that chances of severe dust storm over Delhi and NCR "have decreased". In a tweet, Skymet Weather Vice-President (Meteorology And climate Change) Mahesh Palawat said, "We expect one or two spells during afternoon and evening. Winds will be 50 to 60 Kmph gusting to 70 Km.

2) Thunderstorm, squall and hail in Himachal and Uttarakhand today: The IMD has forecast that thunderstorm, accompanied by squall (wind speed reaching 50-70 kmph) and hail, are very likely on Tuesday at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

IMD Director Manmohan Singh told news agencies on Tuesday that heavy rains and snowfall can be expected in Himachal Pradesh in the next 24 hours. "Keylong's maximum temperature has dropped to 3.5 degree celsius. The temperature here in Shimla has dropped 4-5 degrees below than the normal temperature," he said.

As predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), early morning rains lashed Chandigarh and adjoining areas on Monday. The authorities in several states, especially Haryana and Punjab, are on a high alert following the storm advisory issued by IMD.

Taking note of IMD's warning of thunderstorms at isolated places in the state, the Haryana government had on Sunday announced the closure of all schools on Monday and Tuesday.

The Union home ministry, in a fresh advisory on Sunday, said 13 states would be affected by thunderstorms, along with squall and hail on Monday. The fresh warning came days after thunderstorms wreaked havoc across the country, claiming at least 124 lives and injuring more than 300.

According to government figures, the worst casualty was reported in Uttar Pradesh, where 73 people were killed and 91 others injured. In Rajasthan, 35 people were killed and 206 injured. Eight people were killed in Telangana, six in Uttarakhand and two in Punjab; nearly 100 people were injured in these these three states.

Here are the top 10 developments around the recent weather conditions, today's weather forecast by IMD and the likelihood of thunderstorms in North India according:

1. Rains in Chandigarh: Chandigarh and its surrounding areas witnessed early morning rains on Monday. The city authorities are on a high alert following the storm warning issued by the met department.

2. Haryana schools closed: The Haryana government has announced that all schools will remain closed in the state on Monday and Tuesday.

State Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma on Sunday said the decision has been taken in view of the MeT Department's warning.

The weatherman has forecast thunderstorm with squall at isolated places in the state on May 7 and thunderstorm with squall and hail at some places on May 8.

3. Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Department issues advisory: In view of the warning, the Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Department, in an advisory, has suggested safety tips to be adopted in case of thunderstorms, dust storms and squall.

A spokesperson of the department said there is no need to panic and people should follow the precautions, pay special attention to children and senior citizens.

All departments have been directed to stay alert, he said.

4. Thunderstorms, rains likely in 13 states, 2 UTs on Monday: At least 13 states and two Union Territories are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by squall, hail and heavy rains on Monday (today), the Home Ministry said.

Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds are very likely at isolated places in Uttarakhand and Punjab, while some places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to witness heavy rains, a Home Ministry official said quoting an Indian Meteorological Department advisory.

Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds are very likely at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh.

Dust storm and thunderstorm are also likely at isolated places in West Rajasthan, the official said.

5. Rain leads to a drop in temperature in Himachal Pradesh: Stormy weather conditions prevailed in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday leading to a significant drop in temperature.

Minimum temperatures dropped by three to five degrees during past 24 hours and Keylong recorded a low of 3.7 degrees Celsius while Kalpa and Manali recorded the minimum temperatures at 4.6 degrees Celsius and 6.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The MeT department here warned of thunderstorm accompanied by squall and hailstorm in the mid and lower hills on May 7 and 8. It predicted rains or thundershowers in the mid and lower hills and rains and snow in the higher hills till May 10.
