Thunderstorm, dust storm warning across India: Here's a state-wise forecast

With thunderstorms and dust storms killing hundreds across the country, it has become prudent to keep a track of IMD's warnings. Here's IMD's forecast for the coming four days

 

Uttar Pradesh is expected to be hit by another round of thunderstorms over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on Sunday. The state witnessed over a dozen deaths due to thunderstorms over the weekend.

The weather department has predicted thunderstorms for several states across India, including Bihar, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, in the next few days.

The fresh warning comes days after 17 people were killed and 11 injured in deadly dust storms in Uttar Pradesh.

Dust storms have become a regular phenomenon in the state, leaving over 130 people dead last month. On May 13, 39 people died in various districts, including Bareilly, Barabanki, Bulandshahr and Lakhimpur Khiri.

On May 9, a severe storm left 18 dead and 27 others injured. Five people died in Etawah district, three each in Mathura, Aligarh, and Agra, two in Firozabad and one each in Hathras and Kanpur Dehat.

Here is what the IMD has predicted for different parts of the country:

Dust storm or thunderstorm in 13 UP districts on Monday: The IMD has predicted another round of storms in 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh in the next two days.

According to the meteorological department, the districts that might be hit by thunderstorms or dust storms are Banda, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur, Hardoi, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Rampur, Moradabad, Meerut, Bijnore, Muzaffarnagar, and Saharanpur.

The weather office has also forecast "very likely" rain in certain parts of the state.

Thunderstorms across India on Monday: Apart from Uttar Pradesh, the country's eastern, central and southern regions are also expected to witness thunderstorms on Monday. The regions include Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Thunderstorms expected to hit North India on Wednesday and Thursday: The IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied with gusty winds and lightning over Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi for Wednesday and Thursday.

Heavy rain in South and Northeast India: Isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Konkan, Goa, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Karnataka, and Kerala are very likely to receive heavy rainfall over Monday and Tuesday....Read  More

Cyclone Mekunu to make landfall; bring heavy rains in Maharashtra; updates

After inflicting heavy damage in Yemen, Cyclone Mekunu is expected to make landfall in Oman on Saturday. Here's how the cyclone will affect India 

Cyclone Mekunu is expected to make landfall in Oman on Saturday morning. The cyclone, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), is also likely to affect the weather along India's western coast.

The Mekunu cyclone is likely to cause the western coast to receive "heavy spells of showers", an IMD official said on Thursday.

Taking note of the weather forecast, an advisory was issued in Goa on Thursday asking locals and tourists not to venture into the sea for the next 72 hours.

The IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into certain sections of the Arabian Sea until specific dates.

Here's all you need to know about the cyclone Mekunu:

1) Swimming banned off Goa's coast for 72 hours: A private lifeguard agency, appointed by the state government, on Thursday issued an advisory banning swimming at Goa's popular beaches for the next 72 hours.

"Drishti cautions beachgoers and tourists to not venture into the sea for the next 72 hours owning to rough sea conditions and high-speed winds expected. There is a possibility of a surge of waves during the high tide, in the low lying areas of the coast. Drishti advises tourists to avoid venturing into the sea for a swim or water-based recreational activities," the advisory states.

2) IMD predicts heavy showers along Maharashtra coast: Cyclone Mekuna is likely to trigger heavy showers along the western coast of Maharashtra in the next few days, an IMD official said on Thursday.

"The Mekunu cyclone has moved away from the Indian coast, but it is likely to cause the western coast (to) receive some heavy spells of showers," the official added.

3) Cyclone Mekunu's impact to be limited to coastal areas: According to the IMD official, the inner part of Maharashtra will largely be unaffected by the cyclone. " Konkan region of Maharashtra would get a few showers in the next few days. Some isolated places in Konkan will receive rain, but the rest of Maharashtra will have no impact," the official said.

4) IMD warns fishermen: In a press release issued on Thursday, IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the southwest Arabian Sea until May 24 and into the west-central Arabian Sea until May 26.

5) Cyclone Mekunu likely to make landfall in Oman tomorrow: The cyclone is expected to be “extremely severe” when it makes landfall on the Arabian Peninsula this weekend.

The cyclone had earlier thrashed the Yemeni island of Socotra causing severe flooding and damage.

"The coastal areas were submerged by floods causing heavy damage to homes," with more than 10 villages in Socotra's south and east cut off, Ramzy Mahrous, governor of Socotra, told news agency AFP.

6) Mercury to come down in Marathwada and Vidarbha: The official said temperatures across Marathwada and Vidarbha are expected to come down in the coming days. "The circular winds in the Bay of Bengal have caused some cloud formation over parts of Maharashtra, which has reduced the temperature and brought relief to people," the official said.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said dust storm and heavy rain likely at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, western Rajasthan and states in North-east

In a fresh advisory, the Home Ministry quoting India Meteorological Department (IMD) said thunderstorm, along with rain, is likely in some places of Delhi and adjoining NCR on Sunday, while 13 states will be affected with the same, along with squall, hail on Monday.

The home ministry noted that 124 people were killed while more than 300 injured in five states due to thunderstorm and lightning in the last two days. The maximum casualty was reported in Uttar Pradesh where 73 people were killed, while 91 others were injured. Most of the deaths and injuries in the state took place in Agra region, a home ministry spokesperson said.

In Rajasthan, altogether 35 people were killed and 206 injured, while eight people were killed in Telangana, six in Uttarakhand and two in Punjab. Nearly 100 people were injured in Telangana, Uttarakhand and Punjab.

Following the thunderstorms, power supply was cut off in many areas as squall uprooted trees and snapped electricity cables. At least 12,000 electric poles were uprooted and 2,500 transformers damaged in the affected states in the last two days.

Here are the top 10 developments around recent weather conditions and the likelihood of today's weather and thunderstorm in North India according to IMD:

1. Thunderstorm likely in Delhi, NCR: Thunderstorm along with rain is likely in some places of Delhi and adjoining NCR on Sunday, the Home Ministry said.

Quoting an advisory of the India Meteorological Department, a Home Ministry spokesperson said thunderstorm and rain would occur over some places in Delhi and adjoining NCR, including Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, Khurja, Greater Noida, and Bulandshahr on Sunday.

2. IMD forecasts hail, heavy rain in 13 states: Thunderstorms accompanied by squall, hail and heavy rains are likely to occur in at least 13 states and two Union Territories across the country on Monday, the Home Ministry said.

Thunderstorm accompanied with squall and hail are very likely at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh while thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds are very likely tomorrow at isolated places in Uttarakhand and Punjab.

The IMD also forecasted Light rain to thundershowers at isolated places during next 48-72 hours in Punjab.

Heavy rains are likely on Monday at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, a Home Ministry official said on Sunday quoting an Indian Meteorological Department advisory.

Dust storm and thunderstorm are also likely at isolated places in West Rajasthan as well, the official said.

3. Rs 4,00,000 ex-gratia to kin of thunderstorm victims in UP: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath on Saturday announced Rs 4,00,000 ex-gratia each for the kin of those killed during Wednesday's thunderstorm. He, along with other officials, reached here and interacted with the victims and reviewed the relief measures being taken by the district administration.
